You've seen Sean Penn's 'Milk.' Now meet the real Harvey Milk. Harvey Milk ignored those countless doubters who told him that an openly gay man could never be elected to political office. In 1977, his dream became a reality when he was voted onto to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. And although his assassination is one of our great tragedies, his legacy prevails.
Long before Sean Penn portrayed Milk (earning a Best Actor Oscar nomination, while the film is up for this year's Best Picture honor), director Robert Epstein won his first of two Academy Awards when 'The Times of Harvey Milk' took home Bets Documentary in 1985.
The film, which has touches of both heartwarming humor and heart-wrenching tragedy, was produced after Milk's death using exclusive footage and interviews documenting his rise as both a leader and symbol of achievement in the gay community. The Times of Harvey Milk is perhaps the greatest documentary ever made. How fortunate was Rob Epstein to have gotten Milk's colleagues and friends to participate in this film, which I have shown any number of people who have walked away changed and inspired to live their lives as Harvey had - with integrity in spite of his personal demons. Five stars for this deeply moving and evocative film.
