Johnny Depp Dishes on Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland'

Over the past two decades, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have teamed up to create a handful of complex, indelible and downright strange characters, from a shy scissor-handed boy in 'Edward Scissorhands' to a misanthropic candy maker in 'Charlie in the Chocolate Factory' to a demonic barber in 'Sweeney Todd.'

In their latest collaboration, Depp dons copious amounts of makeup, some extremely orange hair and, of course, a top hat to play the tea-party-loving Mad Hatter in Burton's reimagining of 'Alice in Wonderland.' We recently caught up with Depp at the press junket for his new John Dillinger flick 'Public Enemies,' and he had this to say about a 'Wonderland' shaped by the slightly off-kilter mind of Mr. Burton: "'Alice in Wonderland' I think is going to be very, very, very fun. It's outstanding ... Tim's work. I think he's outdone himself, you know. Brilliant. The Hatter was very fun to play."

Check out the first photos of Depp as the Hatter, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice, then come back to Moviefone next week for our full interview with Johnny, in which he opens up about 'Alice in Wonderland,' 'Public Enemies' and the return of Jack Sparrow. -- By Tom DiChiara

    Alice in Wonderland' Photos

Burton's go-to man Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter, a man who claims to have escaped decapitation at the hands of the Queen of Hearts and chooses to spend his days engaged in a neverending tea party. Judging by the hair, he likes to drink orange pekoe.

      Disney

The usually brunette Anne Hathaway goes albino to play the White Queen, one of the pieces in a living game of chess. Looks like someone forgot to dye their eyebrows.

      Disney

Relative newcomer Mia Wasikowska, a 19-year-old actress best known for her role on HBO's 'In Treatment,' plays the titular Alice, whose fall down a rabbit hole leads to some whimsical -- and scary -- adventures in 'Wonderland.' Before 'Alice,' which is schedule to hit theaters in 2010, audiences will get a peek at the up-and-comer's acting chops in this year's Oscar contender 'Amelia,' in which she plays a rival pilot to Hilary Swank's Amelia Earhart.

      Disney

Matt Lucas tackles the dual role of Tweedledee and Tweedledum in the film. But don't worry -- he doesn't look like that in real life.
