'Harry Potter 6' Gets a PG Rating & More Movie News

Though on paper 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' is the darkest (it delves into Voldemort's past AND a beloved character meets his maker) and raciest (there's a lot of snogging -- see Harry and Ginny Weasley to the left) installment yet, 'Potter 6' has landed a family-friendly PG rating. Since the previous two were PG-13, we're thinking the ratings board was feeling mighty generous in the wake of viewing 'Bruno.' [Variety]

'Baywatch,' the cheesy yet beloved '90s TV series about hot California lifeguards running in slow motion, is headed for the big screen as a comedy. Jeremy Garelick will write and direct the film, which focuses on two unlikely guard candidates trying to hold their own with the show's signature buff bods. [Variety]

'Batman' may not have worked out for him, but George Clooney is eying the lead in another big-budget franchise. The actor is keen to play Tom Clancy hero Jack Ryan in Paramount's proposed franchise reboot. Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck have previously portrayed Ryan in 'The Hunt for Red October,' 'Patriot Games,' 'Clear and Present Danger' and 'The Sum of All Fears.' [Variety]

Though initial estimates for the three-day July 4 weekend had 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' and 'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs' tying for the No. 1 spot at the box office, final numbers give 'Transformers 2' the slight edge, $42.4M to $41.6M. We're going to attribute that to the Megan Fox factor. [EW.com]

'Six Feet Under' star Peter Krause has joined Vanessa Hudgens and Mary-Kate Olsen in 'Beastly,' a modern-day New York City-set retelling of 'Beauty and the Beast.' Krause will play the rich dad to a bratty teen (Alex Pettyfer) who is transformed into a hideous creature by his with (literally) of a classmate (Olsen). [Variety]

Virginia Madsen has signed on to play Kevin Spacey's ex-wife in the indie comedy 'Father of Invention,' about a former billionaire inventor who tries to rebuild his fortune and his family after an eight-year stint in prison. [Variety]

DreamWorks is in negotiations to acquire the film rights to View-Master -- you know, the Fisher Price toy with those 3-D picture discs of country vistas and national landmarks that could be rotated through a viewfinder. Wonder what they'll come up with for the plot. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Up-and-coming commercial director Rupert Sanders is in negotiations to helm 'The Low Dweller,' a 'No Country for Old Men'-esque flick that has Leonardo DiCaprio set to star as a Midwestern man who is released from prison only to be pursued by a mysterious man from his past. [The Hollywood Reporter]
