How do people hate Katherine Heigl? Let us count the ways.Actually, not ALL of us hate the outspoken 'Grey's Anatomy' star. These days, it seems like you can't turn around without hearing bad press about Heigl, who's in the spotlight once again as star of the romantic comedy 'The Ugly Truth.'
But some of us happen to think Heigl's a good actress who's gotten a bad rap. Why couldn't she be the new sweetheart of rom-coms, rather than the actress everybody loves to dis? Isn't it time someone came to her defense?
So clear the courts, Your Honor. We -- the few, the proud, the non-Heigl-haters -- present five reasons the public should give Katherine Heigl a second chance. -- By Patricia Chui
1. She was right about 'Grey's Anatomy.'
Straight off the bat: Should she have dropped out of the Emmy race and criticized the 'Grey's Anatomy' writers last year? No -- it was an ill-considered move, especially given that she was still on the show.
But let's face facts. Izzie's storyline on 'Grey's' sucked that year. The George-Izzie (or "Gizzie") relationship made no sense and had us tearing our hair out in frustration; Izzie spent the whole season moping around, being disrespected by her interns and just generally acting like a terrible doctor; and the medical high point of her season was when she saved a deer's life. Pathetic! Even we wondered if producer Shonda Rhimes had it in for her. So when she said that she wasn't given the material to warrant an Emmy nomination ... well, she was really just saying out loud what we all already thought.2. She was right about 'Knocked Up.'
No question, we heart Judd Apatow. But despite how funny and smart 'Knocked Up' was, some of us walked out of the theater scratching our heads. Why, exactly, did Alison try so hard to have a relationship with Ben? She was a hot, ambitious TV reporter with a rising career. He was an unemployed slacker whose highest aspiration was to start a website featuring naked women. (Plus, much as we love Seth Rogen, even he would admit that he's not exactly in Heigl's league.) In real life, this relationship would never happen. Yet the movie tries to make you sympathize with him, not her. After the movie came out, Heigl said she was uncomfortable with the film, calling it "a little sexist" -- and once again, she may not have been all that smart to say it, but she wasn't entirely wrong, either.
3. She's a good friend. When 'Grey's Anatomy' star Isaiah Washington allegedly referred to co-star T.R. Knight using a homophobic slur, who came to Knight's passionate defense? Heigl. "I'm not okay with it," she told Access Hollywood, slamming Washington for his actions while the rest of the cast stayed silent. "T.R. is my best friend," she said. "I will throw down for that kid." Isn't that the kind of person you'd want in your corner?
4. When a woman's outspoken, people think she's a bitch.
Women have come a long way, baby. Yet they're still often expected to be seen, not heard; to do little more than smile, look pretty and say the right things. Particularly in Hollywood, when so many celebrities dispense boring sound bite after boring sound bite, we think it's refreshing when an actress like Heigl speaks her mind -- it sure makes for more interesting news cycles, at least. But even in this day and age, an opinionated female isn't, apparently, everyone's cup of tea.
5. People only hate her because everyone else hates her.
These things spread like wildfire. Everybody hates Celebrity A, and therefore you should hate Celebrity A, too. But why? Bad reputations can follow actors around like a cloud -- I hear she's difficult! She's lazy! She got fired! She eats puppies! -- and, once earned, they can be awfully hard to shake. No one wants to befriend the one kid everybody hates. (He's weird! He eats paste!) And that means people will stick with the crowd, believing the worst about Heigl regardless of the facts. After all, if Perez Hilton said it, it has to be true, right?
And so, Katherine Heigl: worthy of public hatred, or unfairly maligned for speaking her mind? We think we've made our case. Your Honor ... the defense rests.

Katherine Heigl is a wonderful actress and an absolute sweetheart who has a rep she doesn't deserve. It is a real shame that because she is outspoken now everything she says is twisted by the media so that even a joke is her supposedly bad mouthing something or someone. The reason she said Knocked Up was a little sexist was because she was asked about its portrayal of women, not 'cos she didnt like the movie. She said she loved it and it was one of the best experiences of her career. She said she hoped women would realise the characters were exaggerated on both sides to create the humor. As for the Emmys thousands of actors dont submit for that very reason, she just was honest enough to say so. Women should admire her honesty and bravery. Katie is a class act.

I love Katherine! I think it's crazy that people hate her, she's an amazing actress. I was really disappointed when I found out she didn't get nominated for an Emmy this year. I thought she gave her best performance of the series this season.

I really like KH. She and Gerry Butler really click in The ugly truth. I'm reminded of some of the "old time" duos..Kathrine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart--Cary Grant and Grace Kelly--James stewart andGrace Kelly etc.
Like the majority of us, I only know KH by the movies or tv shows that I see her in. She is undoubtably beautiful, and does remind me of some of the movie stars of the past with some of the photo layouts I see in the magazines or on the internet.
She is obviously intelligent, and has a quick wit, and knows what she wants to do with her career. Another thing....if she is your friend, she is a REAL friend...and is not afraid to come to the defense of a friend and stand up for what she believes.
I do not see her torturing little animals, having affairs and breaking up marriages, or purposely hurting anyone. Although, she did cut her hair and dye it auburn recently. So until I see her being a bad person, I will continue to support her, and her movies, and hope that we would have more people like her in the world. Go Kathrine!.

Uh, no. People hate Heigl because she's a spoiled brat who can't shut her mouth. It's not about being "outspoken," it's about being ungrateful and rude. She was absolute hell to work with on the set of "27 Dresses" so I don't know where the "sweetheart" comment came from. She is the most selfish, egotistical actress I've ever met--and I've worked with Meg Ryan. Heigl's sense of self-importance and entitlement is out of control. And hey, I love outspoken women. My wife is one, and we both love Kathy Griffin and Margaret Cho. Heigl isn't outspoken and brave and wonderful---she's a dime a dozen actress who should take some lessons in humility and gratefulness.

I think that you are very rude!!
Marissa at 3:15PM on Jul 28th 2009
"She was hell to work with in '27 Dresses,' " because you would know, right? I'm sure you worked with her. Note the sarcasm.
susan at 4:16PM on Jul 28th 2009
so you worked with her? if you did it is ok to have an opinion...if not...you're just a dumbass!!!!
izitrong at 4:15PM on Jul 28th 2009
I think you are the one who needs to take some lessons. The only
'Wayne' who worked on the set was a Lighting Tech on the film and if that is you (I have my doubts) you should be ashamed of yourself for even saying such a thing. Regardless of what you think of her your opinion should be withheld else you may find
your name blacklisted in the movie industry. Remember, lighting techs are a 'penny a dozen'. Oh, and your Meg Ryan comment was way off base.

First off, don't totally believe that you ever worked with her at all and second if she really was that bad to work with I don't think she would be getting as many movies as she has been. Kathy Griffen is not outspoken, she just obnoxious, tacky, rude. The comments she makes are not to make a point or to stand up for herself and friends there to get a reaction out of people. It's the way she makes money. In my opinion Katherine Heigl is a much more likeable person. She actually cares about people.

I LOVED KH when she first was on ROSWELL and was so excited 2 c her on GA! I can appreciate anyone with the balls 2 speak up when they feel something is wrong but I liked Isiah and 2 not cut ANYONE slack 4 being wrong just pissed me off. She came out against IW knowing it would fan the flames & ppl would demand that IW be fired. Fans of KH heard that SHE was pissed and then even more ppl demanded IW head on a platter! Everyone else did the smart thing and said nothing bc of the SEVERITY of the issue.Fans are fickle and powerful...this could have changed the pace of GA popularity OR it could have blown over...she wouldnt let it. PLUS she came off real arrogant turning down a Emmy nom and talking bad about a movie SHE did. Nobody made her stay on GA and nobody FORCED her 2 make Knocked Up...Arrogance and an ungrateful attitude is why I started 2 really dislike her! LOVE her as an actress but u dont bite the hand that feeds u. 2 many great actors r trying 2 make it in Hollywood and she turns arnd acts like that? And were suppose 2 think its artistic integrity that lets her put her foot in her mouth? Its very arrogant and I'd say the same about a GUY so its not abt cocky women r bitches but men r just being men.she just doesnt know when 2 shut the F up!

KH is great! I think your defense of her is spot on! She was right about the things people hate her for saying. I love her in romcoms and hope she keeps making them for years and years - I will always go see them!
Elle at 12:50PM on Jul 28th 2009
LOVE Katherine Heigl! She's outspoken, intelligent, and gorgeous. People who think she's "ungrateful" are morons. You should always stand up for what you think is right, period. This is America, when did freedom of speech become so taboo?
Keri at 9:56PM on Jul 25th 2009
Katherine Heigl rocks!!!
taalibba at 2:09PM on Jul 26th 2009
Yep, this is a classic case of people expecting a beautiful woman to sit down, shut up and look pretty and then call her a bitch when she doesn't. And Sondra Rhimes really was giving her nothing to do.
That being said I'm a little annoyed with her myself. Knocked Up was really sexist (and not just toward women) but she still did it. Ugly Truth looks to be 20 times more sexist and she took that too! Having a job is awesome, I'm sure, but there's only so much feminist criticism I can take from her if all she's gonna do is help these movies along...and then attack them after they've made lots of money.
kili at 8:39PM on Jul 28th 2009
ummm. pardon me but when these roles are all she is offered..., however...if she is ever able to have a choice in jobs...i am sure she would rather take a better job...wouldn't anyone?...by not keeping her mouth shut she is expressing the desire...i would think to be offered something better...so far i have only seen her in crap roles...besides...if u don't want to hear someone talk...if u don't like what someone says...u do have a coice...close your ears...stop bitching at someone for opening their mouths...last time i checked America still claims to give All of it's citicens Freedom of speech...No one has a right in this country to force any citicen ...and yes i am dislexic...and doing my best with the spelling ...to keep their mouths shut...until this becomes a dictatorship...or or something other than a democracy...u can bitch all u want...i for one don't care...i just thought i should remind you that if u don't want ppl near you to have freedom of speech...them move to a less free country...i won't be checking for your responce to this... no matter how much u bitch...no one who really matters will actually care...no one important is listening ...u have nothing really important to say...KH was in the right to express herself...and the examples of her bitching ...to me at least YES she was indeed given crap roles in "grey's as well as "knocked up".she has a right to bitch...deal with it...this is not a responce to anyone specific...just whiners that hate her for the reasons listed in the article...and if i could escape being forced to hear tabloid gossip..believe me i would...tabloid roumors aqre not news folks...the crap they show on e! ...i avoid that stupid show and ones like it as much as ppl will allow me too...are only a result of terminal boardom of this country...and the general lack of real news ...and the fact that most reporters are told sometimes to make news...their is a reason why tabloid crap is not respected...not only is it really none of the general public's buiseness what goes on in celeb's love lives...(caugh...caugh...angecaugh...cauphpitt...jennnhackkk!..)...but most of these dumb stories are fictitious ...and poorlly written...there really should be a special genre made for those dumb and board enough to insist on having this kind of crap...if stories like that are going to be written ...and made up...don't confuse the poor people who are at risk of believeing everying they hear on TV ...just put a disclaimer on it please...and don't try to pass it off as truth...and give it it's own genre label. that is all i ask...i am tired of hearing these stories ...told as if true...only to ...when i hear enough details...through full protest ...it doesn't take but a few of these details to relize that the news media is pulling a joike3 on the general public...i simply ask ...please...if u insist on making up stories to entertain ppl...don't try to lie to us ...most of the masses will believe it...and u discredit yourselves in the eyes of ppl like me who are not as intelegentlly ...man i hate dyslexia...impaired...not only are you less likely to be taken serious...at least by ppl like me...but it really gets annoying when more believable stories u come up with are hard to believe because of all the crap u put out and try to pass as truth...i have so little repect for most reporters...i will change the channel when the "news " comes on...as a matter of fact...there is a reson why i call it " the idiot box..."...because nine times out of ten...it is...untill u start distinguishing between fact and fiction put out for entertainment...and do so truthfully...you have lost a listener...stop trying to play jokes on me...it isn't working...please...you are really annoying me and giving me a headache.

I like the movies Katherine Heigl is in but I don't know about some of the comments she has made. She may have been right about Knocked Up, but she knew it when she made the the script and didn't have to do the movie. It would have been a better position to come out and say she refused to do a movie because of sexism. Making the movie and then complaining about it is not classy. I wouldn't say I hate her, but there is nothing to respect about that.
offcrgentleman at 2:17PM on Jul 28th 2009
She's a loudmouth, whiny brat, who is way too full of herself, and has gotten WAY too big for her britches. She's a chain-smoking diva, with an incredibly big ego and sense of self-entitlement. They should have clipped her wings and kicked her to the curb on that show.

There are situations where keeping your mouth shut is the best thing to do regardless if your a man or a woman. The people who can't seem to figure out what situations are ones you speak up on and what are the ones you keep your mouth shut about, are the people who have some serious issues. But in the situations presented in this article, Heigle was clearly in the right to speak up. As a guy, there's nothing better than an independent and intelligent woman who's not at all afraid to respectfully speak her mind and express her opinions, while be able to back them up with intelligence and common sense. Both men and women should possess these qualities, and unfortubately there are many who don't.
offcrgentleman at 2:22PM on Jul 28th 2009
She's awesome because she's georgeous?? Hey, Elle.. isn't that sexist?? Her job is to ACT, not talk. If she doesn't like or believe in what she's doing, or in what they're writing for her on the show, then she should take a hike. She should be a writer, then, not an actress. She gets paid (a LOT of money) to do a specific job. She needs to be put in her place.
