Thought that the summer of action spectacle had come to a close with the storming of theaters by 'G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra' last week? Not so fast. This Friday, the buzzed-about sci-fi flick 'District 9' beams into cinemas and, judging by the ecstatic reviews thus far, it just might be the most utterly unique and entertaining film of the entire summer.Produced by Peter Jackson and directed by his protege Neill Blomkamp, the movie centers on a spaceshipful of peaceful aliens who become stranded in South Africa, are relegated to living in the titular slum and inevitably clash with their human oppressors. Part sci-fi action flick, part social commentary on -- you guessed it -- apartheid, critics are heralding the movie as a popcorn movie for the thinking man. See what reviewers are saying in our roundup below, then chime in with your own thoughts. -- By Tom DiChiara
Moviefone: "Sci-fi lovers should geek out over '9,' one of the most original and inspired genre movies to hit theaters in years."
Variety: "This grossly engrossing speculative fiction bears Jackson's blood-splattered fingerprints but also heralds first-time feature director Neill Blomkamp as a nimble talent to watch."
Bloody Disgusting: "'District 9' is hands down the best film of the summer and has made me love movies all over again. It's engaging, explosive, and pure nonstop awesomeness -- it's what big summer movies are supposed to be."
The Hollywood Reporter: "Combining the very best of the postwar sci-fi movies with their trenchant political undertones and pulse-pounding dynamism and contemporary movie technology that can blend aliens seamlessly into a realistic human world of urban and moral decay, 'District 9' flirts with greatness."
Entertainment Weekly: "What begins with 'news' footage out of South Africa ends with headline news here at home: District 9 proves that there's intelligent alien life in the movie universe this summer."
Sci-Fi Squad: "We were prepared for massive amounts of CGI, but we were definitely not prepared for the huge amounts of awesome that were dumped into our eyes and brains. Honestly, I haven't been this moved by a film or a performance in quite some time."
Cinema Blend: "It's impressive not just as a debut, but as a new example of how to use original sci-fi as a mirror to our own world, and without $200 million budgets and space battles or even hobbits. Peter Jackson took the money he made making a faithful and beautiful adaptation, and has used it to fund something truly, remarkably original."
Hollywood & Fine: "The 'wow' factor in Neill Blomkamp's 'District 9' is huge -- so much so that it would be easy to overlook what a soulful, tragically heroic story it is."

I am very much excited. For once, well like other few times, the art of Cinema has been used to what really needs to be , a form of art made to enrich our lives, exciting all our senses and at the same time forcing our minds to do what we don't do to often: to think..
..see all of you at midnight..tonight!

If your thinking about seeing this think again on a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a -1.
If you would like a review of all recent sci-fi movies maybe you should see this one think poorly organized cliff notes.
Also if you would like to see the office redone without the humor in a sci-fi then maybe you would like this movie.
If it is unclear I would like you to know I left this movie wishing I had somewhere to go to ask for my money back it sucked!!!

The beauty of the whole thing is hard to explain even to yourself. It's a true masterpiece of cinema, both on a technical level and on it's minimalist execution. The story is so riveting and the message is so sobering... it almost make you ashamed to be human. There has never been anything like this movie. It sets a high bar for movie makers and is loud shout to the big studio's... put your money behind writers, directors and actors that care more about film making than money grubbing.

Kristie- The movie "District 9" really stood out- gave a new outlook on exciting movies, and really made me glad i went to see it. It had a great uniqueness to the movie that ive never seen in any other movie ive seen in my entire life!
Jeff- There should be more movies made similar to that movie- It had a mixture of excitement, and alot of emotional hits. It was something different and i really enjoyed seeing it. I look forward to more exciting movies after this one!

PLEASE ... Pass the Barf Bag!!!!
This attempt at Sci-Fi is VERY POOR.
I understand the social and political views ... Couldn't miss them if you tried. What I DON'T understand how you can make a film that is a poor imitation of a Jason -vs- Freddie Hrror film and call it Sci-Fi. Just because it has aliens doesn't make it Sci-Fi.

This movie is quite well made. I would recommend to anyone reading this to go see it! DISTRICT 9 ROCKS!!!!!

i thoroughly enjoyed this movie, it had a few ironic laughs in it. as someone who doesnt watch Sci-Fi films, i was wrapped in with all of the freakishly cool technology and realistic explosions. very well put together film, recommending it to everyone!

I have to say this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Political tripe with a Science fiction spin. Boring, stupid pretense, horible camera angles/shake/movement (a la Blair Witch project) makes it difficult to watch without feeling physically ill. Actually got up and left about 3/4 through. An absolute waste of $12.50 and two hours of my life... Save your money and rent it on Video if you must.

I saw the movie. It started out going no where and ended up that way. I was really looking forward to it and it just sucked!!! If I had know somemore it I would have just rented a DVD!!! Two thumbs down!!! And I like si-fi

THIS MOVIE SUCKS!!! I mean it's so horrible and makes me think of the United Nations, which I believe they suck at anything they do in the name of helping out humanity.
The movie is filmed horribly and if they made any more movies like this I would stop watching movies altogether.
It was so stupid and it went on and on and on and never went anywhere. It should have never been made. It makes the people of South Africa look so bad as well.
I am so sorry I paid money to see this and sat through the entire thing. How could anyone finance this movie? It's so dumb. People who like watching D people talk about A people on VH1 will love the first ten minutes. So idiotic, plain crap.
mixeal at 11:49AM on Aug 18th 2009
it did make the people look bad.
the director is from south africa. he depicted it as he SAW what happened to people. he took real life and made it sci-fi.
Perhaps you should go read up on why he did this before you blow up.
This was by far the best movie i've seen all year.
So much better than harry potter 109 or whatever one we are on now.
way better than transformers 2 with its horrible story and dumb humor. and gi joe... i won't go there. i liked it, but not much
Dean at 9:40AM on Aug 21st 2009

Being a confirmed movie snob (Kurosowa,Bunuel,Bergman...), I was expecting the usual "scifi" crap only to be totally floored and mesmerized by this film. Absolutely the most original SciFi film I have ever seen.
Went to see it to please my "alien crazy" husband and ended up loving it more than he did!
A masterpiece, must be seen!
michael at 11:49AM on Aug 18th 2009
This movie was amazing. and it shows things that have actually happened in this world, but instead of showing it happening to people, using those people as aliens.
glen siad"It makes the people of South Africa look so bad as well."
yes, it did. the director and writer is from south africa. he saw things like this first hand.
He took what happened and made it a sci-fi. so, to a degree, what you saw is something that actually happnes and goes on.
