We crunched the box office receipts and weighed them against our esteemed assessments, and what we've come up with is a list of the most profitable movies that aren't worth the celluloid they were printed on -- or at least the millions they earned at the box office. (Minimum take to make our list: $100 mil.) Looking for some themes? Start with sequels, superheroes and scientific inaccuracy ... -- By Adam Duerson
25. 'Armageddon' (1998)Nothing in this appropriately dubbed disaster pic makes anything close to scientific sense, right down to the plan to divert a Texas-sized asteroid by digging a hole in it and blowing it up. And when we finally got over our wasted 10 bucks, there was Steven Tyler moaning the movie's theme, 'I Don't Want to Miss a Thing,' on the radio for the next six months. Roger Ebert put it best: "No matter what they're charging to get in, it's worth more to get out."
• Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 40%
• Box Office Gross: $201 million
24. 'Bad Boys II' (2003)The first chapter in this urbanized buddy cop story was far from perfect, watchable mostly due to the undeniable charm and chemistry of its fast-talking leads, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. But it's a masterpiece compared to the follow-up, which came a highly unnecessary eight years later. Overblown, under-funny and Michael Bay-ed beyond belief (one scene involving a car chase that mows down half of a third-world village is particularly repulsive), it's 'Bad' alright. And not meaning good.
• Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 23%
• Box Office Gross: $138 million
23. 'Wild Hogs' (2007)You can easily picture the get-together, perhaps at a BBQ, where Tim Allen convinced John Travolta, William H. Macy and Martin Lawrence (surely the easiest sell) to come over to the dark side of "make-a-quick-buck" filmmaking. Pile on top of that foundation a midlife-crisis theme, motorcycles, lots of leather and some tasteless homophobia jokes and there you have all the makings of a ... "make-a-quick-buck" flick.
• Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 14%
• Box Office Gross: $168 million
22. 'Spider Man 3' (2007)... But part 3 could have been sooo good! The lead actors were back, as was director Sam Raimi, with two of the coolest Spidey villains and a $258 million budget to blow through. Easy peasy, right? Raimi messed that all up with questionable casting -- spindly Topher Grace as Venom -- and by heaping on a third antagonist (an overacting James Franco) plus equal amounts of lovey dovey drama, over-the-top humor and, most grievously, an evil Peter Parker cool-catting down the street (this is how a splatter-horror guru depicts "dark"?).
• Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 62%
• Box Office Gross: $336 million
21. 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' (2009) Clearly somebody at 20th Century Fox doesn't get the allure of Wolverine. He's mysterious; a loner. And that's the way we like it. An origins story about the ornery cigar chomper was the last thing any self-respecting X-Men fan ever asked for. But there it was ... And there it went, disappearing from screens while barely recouping its expenses. Just to prove Hollywood doesn't learn its lesson, the same outfit is planning a spin-off featuring Deadpool, who can't talk and doesn't have a head.
• Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 36%
• Box Office Gross: $179 million

Kim at 9:57PM on Aug 21st 2009
No...I'm pretty sure BB2 came out in 2003.

Okay, I don't agree with half of these movies on this list. Blockbusters are definitely for entertainment purposes so they're meant to not make sense and be distributed for pure enjoyment.
Whoever wrote this is being wayy too critical as if they're gonna be intellectual stimulated by watching Fantastic Four or Armageddon. And, most people i've spoke to thoroughly enjoyed Bad Boys 2 compared to the first. C'mon dude, we know not everything will be a Dark Knight but take these movies for what most of them are...pure brainless fun.

I wholeheartely agree with your comment word for word.
Damon at 10:17PM on Aug 19th 2009
You are absolutely wrong. Moviegoers have every right to not have their intelligence insulted and still be entertained by high-budget summer action. That you yourself have let your standards fall so low thanks to your gullibility to the flashy garbage of directors like Bay is your own damn fault, not ours. Stop making general statements.
These films are stupid and are totally appropriate on this list.
Madax at 11:34PM on Aug 22nd 2009
stfu Damon. Everything you said can be said same for your stupid ass too. Unlike you, Lamont makes a good point.
Furthermore, if you don't like the movies, DON'T WATCH THEM AGAIN! There is your simple solution. Turn the movie off, and don't watch it. I don't think there is a more simpler solution than that.

Totally agree! And I believe we--especially the most anxiety-prone, stress-laden, intellectually damaged--need this the most. It is actually good therapy. Yes--stress relief is good therapy--along with self- awareness, etc, etc.

I love how your number one has the highest rating of all the films...

This seems to be a pretty bad topic for an article. "Let's make a list of movies that did extremely well that we thought sucked anyways." Most people would tell you that they loved X-Men Origins simply because of the all out claws Vs. face action. No one really cares if Wolverine shows any emotion other than blind rage while he does it.
Not to mention you got the Dead Pool part wrong. If you would've stayed after the credits instead of raging out of the theater because someone tried to spin original content out of an old story, you would've seen Dead Pool with a brand new hole in his face.

Definately agreed with most of the movies on this list. Especially any Michael Bay movie that was on there. However, I don't know about the order of them. The Matrix and Pearl Harbor dissapointed me way more than Episode 1 did. Plus, where is Episode 2, that one is equally, if not more, terrible than 1. It might seem like I'm hating on all these movies, but I understand that some people like blockbusters. As for me, I like to appreciate the thought a movie stimulates rather than the explosions. Someone was right when they said they all can't be the dark knight, and I agree that these movies are mainly for pointless fun. Also, all the writers for Moviefone suck. They never have their facts straight, and their lists are hardly ever accurate. Spencer Breslin isn't the kid in Two and a Half Men, its Angus T. Jones. Just look at any other list they write, ie. Best movies(60's,70's,80's,90's) and you'll see that they don't know what they are talking about harldy more than I do.

I totally disagree about Wolverine,Spider-Man 3 and Daredevil.I'm a huge fan of Marvel Comics films,so right there, those movies are awesome and I enjoyed each and every one of them.

Wild Hogs was a great movie. District 9 how ever was the worst, horrible piece of garbage I have ever seen!!!! district 9 is plain and simple HORRIBLE. I left after 30 minutes and got my money back, if you go and pay to see this your a fool.

I have been intrigued with Marvel Comics since I was a very very young boy. I remember the original X-men, Fantastic Four, Spiderman, Thor and many others. I never dreamed I would be able to see the comic book heros I loved as a child on the Big screen as an adult. I loved X-men Origins and Spiderman 3. When I saw Armageddon, I wanted to be entertained. I wanted to see heros and I was very pleased with the movie. I go to the movies to be entertained not necessarily to criticize. Are there some genuinely bad movies?, sure there are. But remember this sports fans, entertainment is in the imagination of the beholder.....and everybody has one LOL.

I think all these movies rocked! I cannot believe someone actually bad mouthed most of these movies!
hey..knock,knock...you need to change careers pal!!
You know you liked them jealous person!!
mad at 2:38PM on Aug 19th 2009
The Matrix Revolutions was definitely a great blockbuster so it should not be on your list at all! A couple of other movies on this list should not be on it either. I agree with Melinda I think you should change career paths and leave the best to worst list to the experienced movie buffs!
ArthurPogue at 7:08PM on Aug 21st 2009
I would like to come up with a list of all the critics who should have got another job some where else. I mean how do some of these guys/gals get this job. I looked all over the Internet for on-line schooling where you too can earn a dagree and get a job as a movie critic. Where I to can become an over paid writer who can't come up with any thing good to write so they try to make some kind of point over a subject that is pointless.
Damon at 10:17PM on Aug 19th 2009
The best part about Spiderman III was how fans tried to defend its suckiness by claiming that it was the studio's fault, not Raimi's, for forcing him to add in all the extra fluff.
In reality, it was Raimi's choice through and through. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
William at 10:54PM on Aug 19th 2009
Most of these movies were good?! Transformers 2 is the best movie ever?!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU GUYS?!!!
You all either didn't read the list or you're stuck on the first five. Transformers 2 (BEYOND stupid--like a Friedberg and Seltzer spoof in disguise), Fantastic Four (slowly paced and underdevoloped), Cat in the Hat (in no ways fun at all), Star Wars I (despite a great villain it was wooden and quite annoying at times), Pearl Harbor (you all know the story), Spider-Man 3 (almost everything from the first two is gone), Batman and Robin (does this need explaining?), Matrix 3 (c'mon, none of you were disappointed?), Godzilla (remember this?), Wild Wild West (I wish I didn't), Ghost Rider (worse than Daredevil, especially because this is a more mature comic taken in the wrong direction), Day After Tomorrow (nice try but overall usual bad Emerich outcome), Paul Blart (boring--not to mention there is a difference between funny and stupid), Click (cliched and a terrible last third), and Armageddon (all the Bay ingredients here) all definitely sucked!
Could the placing be different? Sure. And yes, some others on here probably shouldn't be on the list whether because they aren't as terrible as others or because new ones are on their way. But those I mentioned here do indeed deserve to be here!
P.S. Suck it District 9 hater! Calling out the film that I agree saved the 2009 summer definitely makes you lose credibility here.
Jacob at 4:16AM on Aug 20th 2009
I agree with a lot of people that this list is not accurate. It's titled Worst Blockbusters Ever, but apparently bad blockbusters only started being produced since 1997.
Comic Book Guy at 1:55PM on Aug 20th 2009
That's the worst list I've ever seen, it's only for the past 11 years, so how can it be called the "Worse Blockbusters Ever"!
