'Inception' Trailer: Christopher Nolan's Latest Boggles the Mind

Leonardo DiCaprio in InceptionIf director Christopher Nolan's 'Memento' and 'The Dark Knight' got together and made a baby, it might look like his latest film 'Inception,' which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and is about ... well, actually, no one really knows what the heck it's about. Warner Bros. announced the project in February, vaguely calling it "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind" (anyone who has a clue what that means gets a gold star), and it's been shrouded in secrecy ever since.

But now that the teaser trailer for 'Inception' has hit, there are bound to be some answers, right? Eh, not so much. The eerie, mysterious and extremely compelling one-minute clip does little to shed light on the movie's plot, but does a whole hell of a lot to leave us scratching our heads. The trailer features shots of DiCaprio looking alternately sullen and scared enough that he might lose control of his bodily functions. It also showcases an extremely cool fight sequence that flouts the laws of gravity and transpires in a hallway that appears to tilt back and forth at random. And the video offers its biggest clue with a boldface line that reads, "Your mind is the scene of the crime." (Watch the trailer now, then keep reading below for our take on the trippy clip.)

Hmmm ... so what does that all mean? Well, aside from the whole "architecture of the mind" spiel, we've been able to piece together a few tidbits from around the Interwebs. DiCaprio stars as a "CEO type" spearheading an elite force with a super-secret mission; Marion Cotillard is his wife; Ellen Page is reportedly a grad student and Leo's loyal sidekick; Joseph Gordon-Levitt (one of the guys fighting in the hallway) and Tom Hardy play DiCaprio's business associates; and Ken Watanabe takes on the role of the villain. Combining this info with what's depicted in the trailer, we're thinking DiCaprio's "elite force" could be tasked with somehow planting or stealing memories or thoughts from people's minds. Then again, we could be way off. Guess we'll have to wait until the movie hits theaters on July 16, 2010, to find out.
