'District 9' Star May Join 'The A-Team,' WB Drops 'He-Man': Movie News for 9/10

Director Joe Carnahan's 'A-Team' may be complete. With Liam Neeson already cast as leader Col. John "Hannibal" Smith, Bradley Cooper as Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck and UFC fighter Quenton "Rampage" Jackson as Sgt. Bosco "B.A." Baracus, 'District 9' rising star Sharlto Copley has reportedly been offered the role of Capt. H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock. Fingers crossed he accepts. [BlackFilm.com]

By the power of Grayskull ... suck it 'He-Man'! That's basically what Warner Bros. has told the blond-haired, axe-wielding hero to do, nixing plans to make a Joel Silver-produced movie based on Mattel's popular 'Masters of the Universe' toy line. But don't lose heart 'He-Man' lovers: the flick, which stalled out over creative differences between WB and Mattel, is likely to get made at another studio. [Variety]

Oscar winner Tom Hanks, R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe and 'Mandee' singer/songwriter/Baby Boomer fave Barry Manilow are teaming up for a romantic comedy. Seriously. The flick, which is being produced by Hanks and Stipe and will feature Manilow songs throughout, revolves around the intersecting story lines of Barry fans in Las Vegas for the crooner's show at the Mandalay Bay. My dad is currently weeping with joy. [Variety]

English-born actor Max Ryan has joined the cast of 'Sex and the City 2' as Rikard, a European architect who will cross paths (and possibly bump uglies) with Kim Catrall's Samantha. We know -- that is such a Samantha thing to say. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Riding a wave of positive buzz from both the Venice and Telluride film festival's, the big-screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece 'The Road' will receive a wide release on Nov. 25. The film, which stars Viggo Mortensen as a father guiding his son to safety in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, had been slated to receive a limited release on Oct. 16. [Variety]

'Star Trek' star Anton Yelchin will play Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster's son in the dark comedy 'The Beaver.' Gibson plays a depressed man who finds solace in wearing a beaver hand puppet (all the time) -- which causes the son to urge his mom to divorce dear old dad. At least "beaver hand puppet" is a more interesting reason than "irreconcilable differences." [Variety]

Mandy Moore and 'Chuck' star Zachary Levi are letting their hair down for 'Rapunzel': They'll voice the lead roles in Disney's 3-D animated musical/action-adventure inspired by the popular Brothers Grimm fairytale. This version follows the teenage princess (Moore) with 70 feet of hair as she breaks out of her tower prison, goes on the run with a dashing bandit (Levi) and, obviously, tries to stay 70 feet ahead of her pursuers at all times. Director Richard Linklater's 'Me and Orson Welles,' which got good buzz at last year's Toronto Film Festival but hasn't been heard from since, has finally landed a release date. The film, which stars Zac Efron as a teenage actor whom Welles casts in his 1937 stage reimagining of 'Julius Caesar,' will hit theaters on Nov. 25. [Variety]
