Downey Hops to Spielberg's 'Harvey'?: Movie News for 9/15

Steven Spielberg may have found his leading man for his remake of 'Harvey': Busy guy Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly eying the title role of a man who befriends a six-foot-tall invisible rabbit. Meanwhile, Spielberg insists that his long-gestating biopic 'Lincoln,' which has Liam Neeson attached to star as the strong-chinned former president, will proceed as planned -- despite the fact that Robert Redford's 'The Conspirator,' about the aftermath of Lincoln's assassination, will beat his flick into theaters. Beloved actor Patrick Swayze lost his brave 20-month-long battle with pancreatic cancer on Monday, succumbing to the disease at the age of 57. The star, best know for playing the romantic leads in 'Dirty Dancing' and 'Ghost,' is survived by his wife of 34 years Lisa Niemi. [PopEater] | [Swayze's best movie moments] | [Swayze's movies]

Christoph Waltz, who is generating strong Oscar Buzz for his turn as Nazi Col. Hans 'The Jew Hunter" Landa in 'Inglourious Basterds,' isn't getting any nicer for his next role. He'll replace Nicolas Cage (who dropped out last week) as the main villain in the superhero comedy 'The Green Hornet,' playing a Los Angeles crime boss who tries to unite the city's gangs against Seth Rogen's titular masked vigilante. [Variety]

'Hancock' helmer Peter Berg will see if he can score a direct hit with 'Battleship.' He's set to direct a live-action film based on Hasboro's popular naval combat board game, with a release date set for July 1, 2011. [Variety]

Ed Harris, Amy Madigan and Emma Roberts have joined Jennifer Connolly in 'What's Wrong With Virginia,' a drama written and directed by 'Milk' Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black. Harris replaces Liam Neeson as a Michigan sheriff whose run for state senate is jeopardized when his daughter begins to date the son of a psychologically disturbed woman (Connolly) with whom the sheriff has been having an affair. Harris' real-life wife Madigan will also play his on-screen wife. [Variety]

Tia Carrere is hitting the waves to play 1960s Hawaiian surfing legend Rell Sunn, aka the Queen of Mahaka, in the biopic 'Wave Dancer.' In addition to proving that women could ride the big waves just as well as men, Sunn founded a surf contest for children to combat juvenile delinquency and fought breast cancer for 15 years, before dying in 1998. 'Silent Hill' is getting ready to make some noise. Screenwriter Roger Avary has signed on to pen a sequel to the 2006 video game adaptation, in which a woman travels to a remote town to seek treatment for her ailing daughter and there -- of course -- is met with some seriously freak supernatural occurrences.
