Oprah Winfrey can turn an unknown novelist into a New York Times bestseller almost overnight, simply by adding the writer's work to her famed Book Club. So if getting the daytime TV goddess' endorsement for one's book is tantamount to guaranteed success, does the same thing apply for a movie based on a book? The world is about to find out.Back in January, Oprah saw the movie 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire' just before it debuted to raves at the Sundance Film Festival, where it went on to win the competition's coveted Grand Jury Prize, as well as the Audience Award and the Special Jury Prize for Acting (for Mo'nique) ... and she was utterly blown away.
In fact, Oprah was so taken with director Lee Daniels' harrowing adaptation of Sapphire's 1996 novel -- which depicts the inspirational tale of an overweight African-American teenage girl nicknamed Precious (Gabourey Sidibe) who rises above poverty, pregnancy and physical abuse to find redemption -- that she and fellow fan Tyler Perry helped in brokering 'Precious' a $5.5 million distribution deal with Lionsgate and even came aboard as executive producers. "I've never seen anything like it," Oprah said in a statement at the time. "The moment I saw ['Precious'] I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to encourage other people to see this movie. The film is so raw and powerful -- it split me open."
Mariah Carey's 'Precious' Transformation
Fall Movie Preview: Must-See Films
True to her word, the talk-show queen has thrown her full support behind 'Precious' with an uncommon voraciousness, publicly campaigning for it on her talk show (where the trailer debuted) and lining up guest appearances with the stars and filmmaker in advance of the movie's Nov. 6 theatrical release. Most recently, Oprah headed north of the border for the Toronto International Film Festival to thump for the indie gem, joining stars Sidibe, Mariah Carey, Mo'nique, Paula Patton and Sherri Shepherd at the film's red carpet, as well as at the film's press conference. She also reiterated her endorsement of the movie, saying, "It is so raw. It will suck the air out of the room at the end of the film, and that's a good thing."
That may be, but the big question is: Will Oprah's backing spell big box-office dollars for a movie that otherwise might be deemed too small, too dark and too challenging for mass audiences? The simple answer is most likely yes. But Oprah won't be doing all the work on her own. Mo'nique is already generating big-time Oscar buzz for her turn as Precious' extremely abusive mother Mary. Perhaps equally important, Mariah Carey's involvement in the film has moviegoers' interest piqued -- and then some. In a very uncharacteristic move, the notoriously glam singer/actress ditched makeup, hairstylists, designer clothes and even favorable lighting to play a frumpy social worker who takes a special interest in Precious. The result has been that she's earned the strongest notices (by a long shot) of her acting career.
As the movie's tag line says, "Life is rich. Life is Precious" -- and so are the prospects for this little-indie-that-could.

I found that the stuggles in this life for women are always challenging but rewarding. Because, As life goes on and you sort of wind yourself inside of it, it takes you on a journey that never ends. Meaning that trials and tribulations are gonna be constant so you better get ready for the ride of your life. Life is good and life is full of surprises, but you can come thru it all with the help and mercy of God's Love. I love you all . I am a mother just like the most of you guys.

I can't wait for the movie to come out. The reasons I'm exciting is #1 I love Mon'ique's acting and I also love pictures based on true stories. From the previews I saw on Oprah a while ago I think it will be a great movie to watch.
Madge at 2:09PM on Sep 19th 2009
It's not based on a true story. Although, it probably follows along with many children's stories, Sapphire (the author), never says that it's nonfiction.
I also want to see the film, whose trailer I watched on dlisted.com about two months ago. After I saw that, I immediately went after the book and read it in about three hours. It's an amazingly written book and a jaw-dropping tale of a true heroine.
Just because Oprah's blubbering over it doesn't make it any better, it's already great. Ask for the book at your local BAM and Barnes and Noble, becuase from what I understand, it's only recently gone back into print.
I hope people read the book and THEN see the movie for the actual story, not because their TV tells them to.

Oprah's not "blubbering", she is just enthusiastic about the movie....why is that a negative? She,
along with Tyler Perry are merely putting their
support behind this film, hoping their immense
fame/popularity will help this film receive the
due, and notice it deserves. The book, its based
on was GREAT, and it seems an equally great film
has been made from it (big MoNique fan here, anyway).
However, since Will Smith/Angelina Jolie/etc, are
not involved, and given the subject matter, the
normal audience for it might have been relatively
small. That would've been a shame. With Oprah
and Tyler helping to promote it, it will get much
more press, much more "buzz". That White woman
in Idaho just might think about seeing it now.
I hope when awards time comes, this film is not overlooked.

I am a 56 year old white male and it is heartfelt to see a story that shows how cruel we can be to each other without thinking... we as a world need too wake up... and learn to lift each other's spirit's up.. so Two Thumb's up for Oprah for this production.. I am homeless and it is hard out here as people are so judgementel and they no none of the fact's.... People we are more alike than different... and we are all related by time alone this is our time now and we will be remembered by this time... work from the inner spirit not the material bieng... it is much more rewarding.

You are so right. I agree with everything you've said. And to those who believes Oprah is racist,if she is, God isn't. And that is all that should matter. We serve a true and living God. One who sees beyond color, shape or size. He loves us equally. I loved the trailer and I heard the book is good. I am a writer, author and publisher myself so when something such as this hits home, I am all for it. We all have a story. We've all faced many challenges in our lives so we must support others' and feel their pain because we want someone to feel ours, right? My first book, 3 Men I Chose to Love is about my life. Some may like it others may not but it's real and what happened to my family and me and I am a living testimony of God's grace, glory and mercy. We can overcome any obstacles if we push with the direction and guidance of God. Listen to His voice and move out on the positive energy. The devil is who desires us to fail, not God. He wants the best for us. Blessings to all involved in the making of Precious. Author Alyce C. Thompson www.alycecthompsonbooksinc.com

Thank you for speaking up when you didn't have to. I grew up in a small town in the segregated south and never understood why human beings couldn't love one another. I've grown far beyond that. Oprah brought this bookmovie to my attention. With her and Tyler Perry at the helm and Mariah and Mo'Nique acting, this will be a great movie. The clips show a compelling drama with a message - some people might want more "evil"; but we need Godly productions. I too am thinking about writing a book. .Hope the message will leave something compelling as I see this movie will. The Oprah Effect is real & I am thankful and hopeful to know that people like Oprah exist in our society.

We saw the trailers for this movie at the Maui Film Festival in August... and the trailers alone -left the audience gasping and speechless.... We all left talking about Precious... not wanting to wait until it was released.... Definitely a story that needed to be told on the Big Screen... and needs to be seen by many.... There are lots of "Precious'" out there.... I wish everyone would see with their hearts and look for the beauty inside...

I cried towards the end of this trailer. I hope young Black/white teens get out to see this movie. There are so many young teens today having babies when their lives are not great to start with. It makes for a hard long road.

Such a sad story that unfortunately has been shared by many in real life. The beauty of this movie and life is that everyone can make a change in their lives. I also believe that their are still angels and very good people in this world that appear at the right moment who shed hope and inspiration. Looking forward to seeing this movie too.

The trailer made me cry. Can't wait to see a good movie for a change.

WOW! That's all I can say is WOW! I'm a 42 year old that have had a dream for as long as I can remember to be in a movie. The funny part about it is that Tyler and Oprah both are the two people I have prayed to meet and talk to about my story and my dreams. I know this movie will bless so many and I'm proud of the young actress that's playing Precious and I will contuine to pray for the young and old dreamers and the Tyler's and Oprah's of the world that help to make their dreams come true.Life can bring you so much pain but the blessing in the pain is just like the rain it's doesn't last always! And we have to just enjoy the sunny days!
Again all I can say is WOW to the movie!

I will watch this movie just because when I watched the clip- the young lady touched my heart. I can't imagine living life like that- this young lady might be many among us today, only we don't look with our hearts only with our hatred and judgemental eyes. Thanks for heads up, Oprah.

OMG, that is one movie that everyone needs to see!
Jen at 2:47PM on Sep 19th 2009
This looks like an amazing and inspirational movie, and I would love to watch it! I won't be able to go see in theatres because of my own baby boy, but I expect I'll be buying it if possible.
