'A Nightmare on Elm Street' Remake Trailer: Meet the New Freddy Krueger

Jackie Earle Haley in A Nightmare on Elm StreetBreak out the Red Bull and get ready to (nine, ten) never sleep again: Freddy Krueger, everyone's favorite knife-fingered, red-and-green-sweater-clad, burnt-faced murderer, is set to haunt dreams once again next spring ... and now there's a creepy new trailer to prove it.

Produced by Michael Bay and directed by music-video auteur and first-time feature helmer Samuel Bayer, this new 'Nightmare on Elm Street' will put a contemporary spin on Wes Craven's blood-soaked 1984 horror classic about a child molester who is burned alive by angry parents and reaps his vengeance by stalking and killing (in very inventive ways) teenagers as they dream.

The cast is teeming with up-and-coming young stars, such as Kyle Gallner ('Smallville'), Thomas Dekker ('Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles'), Rooney Mara ('Youth in Revolt') and Kellan Lutz ('The Twilight Saga: New Moon'). But let's face it, the big story here is that for the first time ever, new blood is being brought in to play Freddy Krueger, a role that made Robert Englund famous and, well, also kind of pigeonholed him.

While we're sad to see Rob go (c'mon, you know there's a cameo for him in there somewhere), we've been a little giddy to see what Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley ('Little Children,' 'Watchmen') would bring to the mix. Judging by the trailer, he will not disappoint. The pepperoni pizza-looking face and cartoonish one-liners that came to characterize Englund's Freddy are a thing of the past. Instead, we get a Freddy that looks a lot like Voldemort and rasps out his lines like a man hell-bent on one thing: revenge (which he is).

Adding another interesting layer to the reboot is that the film will tackle Freddy's origin story and even seems to insinuate that maybe, just maybe a pre-dream-haunting Krueger wasn't a child molester after all. Interesting. Will this new 'Nightmare' be better than the old one? Will Jackie Earle Haley make an even scarier Freddy than Robert Englund? Sound off below. And remember: "One, two, Freddy's coming for you" ... in theaters everywhere on April 30, 2010.
