WARNING! Potential 'Paranormal Activity' spoilers below -- read on at your own risk.Any remaining doubt that the super-low-budget horror-thriller 'Paranormal Activity' is the new 'Blair Witch Project' pretty much went flying out the window this weekend. Like 'Blair Witch,' which cost $60,000 to make and hauled in $140.5 million domestically, the made-for-$11,000 'Paranormal' is scaring up big bucks at the box office. After earning an impressive $7.7 million in 160 theaters in its first weekend, then grossing an astounding $20.2 million in 760 theaters last weekend, the film scored another $22 million this weekend to cut the mighty 'Saw VI' down to size, claim the No. 1 spot at the box office and raising its overall gross to a scary good $62.5 million.
Also like 'Blair Witch,' moviegoers are leaving 'Paranormal' screenings scared to bone and convinced that the footage they've just seen is real. Case in point: Last week, hundreds of thousands of Internet users were Google-searching for the obituary of the film's male lead, Micah Sloat, who may or may not have met his maker (we're not telling) during the purely fictional events depicted in the movie -- which goes to show that audiences are having a very hard time distinguishing fact from fiction.
Sounds crazy, right? Well, it kind of is. While 'Blair Witch' cultivated and fed off the idea that the film was comprised of real "found footage" of a doomed witch hunt in the Maryland backwoods, 'Paranormal' has never been billed as anything but a work of naturalistic, bone-chilling, scare-the-everliving-crap-out-of-you fiction. But if some moviegoers are bent on believing that the movie is real, it's not hard to see why.
'Paranormal' stars Sloat and fellow acting unknown Katie Featherston as a couple who set up a camera in their bedroom because they believe they're being terrorized by a demonic spirit at night -- and, we're sure this has had no part in confusing moviegoers, their characters just happen to be named Micah and Katie. Adding to the cinema veritas feel are the unaffected and natural performances and, perhaps more importantly, the extremely real-looking footage.
For the record, Sloat, who made his acting debut in the film and until now earned a living as a computer programmer working out of his L.A. abode, is alive, well and, in the wake of 'Paranormal''s insane success, auditioning like crazy. And thanking his lucky stars the movie wasn't relegated to a DVD release. "I was fine with that if that's what had to happen," he recently told Entertainment Weekly, "But I'm really glad it didn't."Featherston shares the sentiment. "This movie has really just opened up so many doors, and I'm meeting good people and reading scripts and getting auditions that I wouldn't have had otherwise," the Texas-bred 27-year-old told the Hollywood Reporter. Featherston, who studied acting at Southern Methodist University and had one credit (the straight-to-DVD 'Mutation') to her name before 'Paranormal,' recently inked a representation deal with the very reputable APA. And although she'll next appear in her friend's horror flick 'Walking Distance' (still awaiting a release date), she isn't afraid of being labeled a one-trick pony. "I don't have any control over how people will see me. I'm hopefully going to do a wide variety of things. We'll see."

I saw Blair Witch and just saw Paranormal. Blair Witch blows this thing out of the water. I left the theater wanting my money back. IT SUCKED !!!
Not scary at all. Looked like they watch a couple episodes of Ghost Hunters and then used a computer to recreate some of the stuff they saw on there. The last two minutes of the movie was the only good part.

I really hated the movie. I couldnt stand the camera jumping all over and felt nausea and had to constantly look away it drove my eyes nuts and stomach. It wasnt scarey. A lil interesting is all. Very low budget movie and not what I thought it was to be. I thought the boyfriend was the best part and would like to see him in future movies he was entertaining. Nothing special about her acting. The movie seemed real but knew it wasnt. Dont waste your money or get food the camera wigglin all over gets you sick

I thought the same thing, the only good parts were in the previews. People were laughing and cracking jokes. I thought movie was lame and a complete waste of my time and money!!

I agree! The actors did a good job, but there was just not enough store line. I did not like it,i left feeling cheated out of a movie ticket!

I agree. It was not scary at all and half-way through it, I didn't feel sorry for Micah, who was acting like an insensitive macho idiot. Others in the theater said things like "Well, that was crap" when the film came to its abrupt, albeit predictable, end. We should have gone to Zombieland, instead. Woody rarely disappoints.

Agree with ya there Bobby. Goin in, I was expecting to be scared-the-freak-out-of-me, but I end up laughing thru-out the movie >.>; especially the part where she got drag out of the bed LoL Blair Witch scared me more than Paranormal >

I agree with bobby. I was debating on seeing the movie. I heard it was stupid and then I heard it was the most scariest movie. Not!!! It bored me to death I almost fell asleep and was not scared at all!! Sorry a door moving a few inches is not scary to me. I feel bad that I wasted my money. I would say wait till its on DVD but then spending the money to rent it is a waste as well.

I agree only I think everyone that's wanting to see it should just sneak in and watch the last 10 mins of it cuz that's the only part with any action what so ever I'm actually mad that I paid to see it
pville at 6:11AM on Oct 27th 2009
I haven't seen it yet; however, just the fact that they have likened it to Blair Witch Project, single handedly the most unscary movie classified as the most frienghtening movie ever, gives credence to the other posts that I have glanced at. It is just lame, a thriller for the kids. The only horror is the fact that there are people who will think it is terrifying and real because they are told it is.

While I knew this wasn't "real", it did scare the living crap out of me. Horror/slasher films do nothing for me. They don't scare me, they're just gross. Movies like this get under my skin and keep me up at night. I didn't like "Blair Witch", I didn't think it was scary at all. The ending was slightly creepy but that was about it. "Paranormal", on the other hand, is the old-school kind of horror flick that scares you more by what you don't see than what you do. To me, ghosts are scary. If they scare you and you're up for it, SEE this movie.

You're scared of something that doesn't exist? I don't get it. Looks like a horribly lame movie, sorry.
ylg at 1:25AM on Oct 27th 2009
Excellent comment Jennifer. I felt the same way about Blair Witch, I hated it. But I loved Paranormal Activity. The suspense was truly horrific.
Richard at 7:49PM on Oct 28th 2009
Doesn't exist?? Okay.. That's because you never had something like that HAPPEN TO YOU!! I had the EXACT sam STUFF happen to me.. that was in THIS movie! The only difference is I didn't becom possesed or die! HARD footsteps, breathing, blankets moving up, door closing, EVERYTHING.. The difference is.. I PRAYED .. AND THE DEMON WENT AWAY. Please dude, take youe anti-religion, "isn't scientifically possible" ass outta here. I HAD it happen to me before, and I'm not nuts.. that stuff happens in real life.. don't know about the whole dying thing tho..but hey, who knows.. I'm just glad I know God's TRUE name.. in the Bible it's Jehovah. And I prayed to him THROUGH Jesus. If you do that.. you'll ALWAYS be safe. ANYWAY.. I wasn' SCARED after the movie, but.. that's a scary movie. Blood and Guts films are a joke.. please..This stuff is scary cause it's REAL.

i think they did a great job with this movie specialy with the marketing. the actors were not boring. the scary scenes i think they were great but for me they needed to have more of them to keep the audience going. everytime you got scare with one scene you had to way so long for the next thing to happen that you had forget about the one you saw. and it took so long for everything to build up the big finish that you were left wanting more. anayway i love it.
P.S.
a messege tO the studio. PLEASE JUST BECAUSE ITS MAKING SO MUCH MONEY PLEASE DONT RUING THE EXPERIENCE OR THE MAGIC OF THIS MOVIE WITH A SEQUEL "BOOK OF SHADOWS" ANYONE LMAO
bballgal4343 at 10:28AM on Oct 20th 2009
Saw it, liked it, but didn't love it. The only really scary part was the last 15 minutes or so.
bigbobsh2o at 2:01PM on Oct 20th 2009
Shows how stupid people are. They tell you at the end that this is NOT real. The movie sucked too. The reason why the last 30 minutes is so shocking, is because you are so bored through out most of it.
