'Saw VI' to Be Shown Only in Porno Theaters in Spain

The pain in Spain stays mainly in ... well, porno theaters.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Spanish Culture Ministry's Film Institute -- Spain's version of the MPAA -- has given torture film 'Saw VI' an X rating. That effectively relegates the film to showings in the limited circuit of theaters dedicated to pornographic films. The reason: Extreme violence.

According to the Reporter, Spanish distributor Buenavista had scheduled a wide release today with 300 copies, a large number for Spain. But an X rating limits the film to showings in only eight theaters that run pornographic films. The rating took Buenavista by surprise; the distributor had expected a "not under 18" like the previous 'Saw' outings, and has appealed the decision. This is the first time the Spanish ratings commission has awarded an X because of violence.

The 'Saw' franchise has been very successful in Spain, where the previous two installments each earned over 4 million Euros ($6 million).

'Saw VI,' distributed in the U.S. by Lionsgate, opens today in more than 3,000 theaters. The previous five films have earned a combined total of more than $340 million and have each been rated R for grisly bloody violence, torture and bad language.
