One Jacked Gyllenhaal Holds Court in First 'Prince of Persia' Trailer

Jake Gyllenhaal putting on muscles appears to finally have been worth it.

Disney's first trailer for 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time' hit the Web Monday, showing a glimpse into the newest mega-project from Jerry Bruckheimer and his flashy toys. Pictures famously circulated last year of the normally medium-build Gyllenhaal showing off layers of extra muscle for the role.

In the trailer, Gyllenhaal shares a lot of screen time with costar Gemma Aterton ('Quantum of Solace') and looks videogame-stylized in the tradition of Angelina Jolie in 'Lara Croft.' The duo play Prince Daston and Princess Tamina, an odd couple matched together to take a powerful dagger that can turn back time by unleashing sand to a guardian temple, and protect it from, well, a nefarious old guy wearing a black cape.

Early buzz on the trailer is mixed. Pulpy elements may appear silly -- marked by the appearance of Ben Kingsley wearing eye make-up, and Gyllenhaal's pan-national accent (after last year's underwhelming 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,' 'Indiana Jones Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,' and 'Jumper,' the world doesn't need another campy multinational action epic) vacant stare and '70s style long stringy hair.

But there is a cool stylistic element that feels fresh.

Bruckheimer is no stranger to globetrotting pulp action, and 'Prince of Persia,' directed by Mike Newell ('Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'), looks similar to his 'National Treasure' actioners. The movie is scheduled for release May 28, 2010.

We'll see if those muscles come in handy.
