Zach Galifianakis Falls for Humpty Dumpty Role in 'Puss in Boots'

So, where are all the king's horses and all the king's men? Per the Hollywood Reporter, Zach Galifianakis -- the decidedly offbeat, wonkish stand-up comic who popped out of the underground scene this year with his role in 'The Hangover' -- may furnish the dulcet tones of Humpty Dumpty in 'Puss in Boots,' an upcoming 'Shrek' prequel lensing soon toward a 2011 theatrical bow.

Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, among others, are signed to provide voices for the flick, which is set during the period before the peripatetic Puss got all nasty (then nice) toward the goodhearted ogre. Tom Wheeler, perhaps best known for penning the 2005 Rome-set miniseries 'Empire,' was announced earlier this year as the scribbler of the screenplay. 'Shrek the Third' helmer Chris Miller, who's also had some penmanship on the script, will be sitting in the 'Puss' director's chair.

'Puss,' incidentally, is very loosely based on the central figure in a 17th century French fairy tale that has been updated, satirized and glamorized on screen and stage throughout the centuries. As for our favorite egghead, Humpty Dumpty, he's a neat choice for Galifianakis, who raised his serio-comic game in 'The Hangover,' one of this year's top grossers.

Galifianakis will also be increasingly ubiquitous during the next couple of years. THR noted several of his new projects, including the feature 'Due Date' opposite Robert Downey Jr. and a 'Hangover' sequel, on top of his bread-and-butter gig on HBO's 'Bored to Death.'
