You just can't keep a good man down. Coming off the huge success of 'The Hangover,' Bradley Cooper has signed on to star in the sci-fi suspense thriller 'Dark Fields,' according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter.
The story, from a 2002 novel by Alan Glynn, centers on a down-and-out New York writer who comes across a designer drug guaranteed to spike intelligence and personality. The pill makes him smarter and successful -- he makes a killing in the stock market -- but he begins to have horrible side effects: piercing headaches, intense bouts of rage and a "trip-switching" effect in which time begins to have a stop-motion quality.
Neil Burger, who helmed the exquisite 'The Illusionist,' will direct the film, which begins shooting next spring for a release by Universal.
Cooper, who has been hard at work on Garry Marshall's 'Valentine's Day' and Fox's 'The A-Team,' replaces Shia LaBeouf, who was originally set to star in the project.
This outing sounds fascinating -- particularly since it's in the hands of the adept Burger -- and it reminds us of some of the work of Philip K. Dick or J.G. Ballard. Let's hope that the film lives up to its potential and doesn't become a cinematic mess like 'Jumper.'
