Paltrow Replaces Theron as Kidman's Lover in 'The Danish Girl'

Here's some offbeat casting news.

Gwyneth Paltrow has been cast opposite Nicole Kidman in the big-screen adaptation of 'The Danish Girl,' David Ebershoff's book about the relationship between the first post-operative transsexual and his wife, Variety reports.

Paltrow will play Greta Wegener, a portrait painter in the 1920s who persuades her Danish husband, Einar (Kidman), to stand in for her absent female model. Dressing as a woman strikes a latent chord in Einar and he eventually decides to undergo the very first male sex-change operation.

Tomas Alfredson, who helmed the cult vampire film 'Let the Right One In,' is directing 'Danish Girl' for a 2010 release.

Paltrow replaces Charlize Theron, who had originally been cast for the role. It's unclear why she exited but we're certainly disappointed. The prospects of Theron and Kidman making out on the big screen would have been tantalizing. Come to think of it, the idea of Paltrow and Kidman together is kind of kinky, too.

All three actresses are no strangers to gender-bender roles: Kidman played lesbian writer Virginia Woolf in 'The Hours,' Paltrow played a woman who had to masquerade as a man in 'Shakespeare in Love' and Theron won an Oscar as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 'Monster.'

This is one piece of Danish pastry we don't want to miss.

Would you rather see Kidman make out with Theron or Paltrow?
