It's about time legendary director Martin Scorsese receives an honoree award. In this morning's announcement, the HFPA, along with Vera Farmiga, declared that the 'Raging Bull' director will be bestowed with the Cecil B DeMille Award during the January 17 live telecast of The 67th Annual Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association chose Scorsese for his "outstanding contributions to the entertainment field," which include the Golden Globe-winning 'The Departed' and 'Gangs of New York.'
Voted by the HFPA, The Golden Globes is usually suspect when it comes to matters of taste. (Robin Williams oddly did receive the same honor back in 2005.) But in the overcrowded Awards show season, I'd rather see an often-overlooked Scorsese snatch up a prize over any other Tinseltown main player.
Recent Cecil B. DeMille winners include Steven Spielberg (2009), Warren Beatty (2007), Anthony Hopkins (2006) and Michael Douglas (2004).
Nominations for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be announced at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 15. British comedic actor Ricky Gervais has been awarded the coveted role of host.
