Writer Hired to Fatten Up 'Hansel and Gretel'

tommy wirkolaWhen your mom told you the story of 'Hansel and Gretel' at bedtime, didn't you secretly want the story to keep going? If so, you're in luck. 'Dead Snow' writer/director Tommy Wirkola has hired writer Dante Harper to pen the horror-action comedy. Kevin Messick, Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, and Chris Henchy are producing the flick for Gary Sanchez Productions.

The next installment of the fairy tale joins the intrepid siblings 15 years after they escaped the gingerbread house--an incident that has inspired them to become bounty hunters (because, you know, even now those woods are chock full of witches). Word is that the flick will have a gory but funny feel along the lines of 'Shaun of the Dead.'

It's not the first time this tale has been put on the screen, or course. Most recently, there was a South Korean feature in 2007, a 2002 version starring 'Gossip Girl''s Taylor Momsen and Jacob Smith, and even a Disney Channel live-action film short by a young pre-'Pee-wee's Big Adventure' Tim Burton. So obviously, there's plenty of interest in finding new ways to scare a new generation of kids.

Who knows? If this one catches on, the Brothers Grimm could become the source of a great horror franchise. We can see it now -- 'Three Little Pigs: The Smell of Bacon.'
