'Saw' fans rejoice! Not even box-office death can stop the enduring franchise from trudging sadistically on.As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, at the Media and Money Conference yesterday, Lions Gate Vice Chairman Michael Burns confirmed what many horror blogs have suspected for a while: 'Saw VII' is officially in the works.
Despite the recently released 'Saw VI' earning a paltry $14.1 million its opening weekend and getting trounced by 'Paranormal Activity,' Burns said that the franchise was upping the ante by releasing 'Saw VII' in 3-D.
"As long as we make money on it, we'll keep doing this," said the brutally honest capitalist. Shooting is expected to start in January, with 'Saw V' director David Hackl returning to the director's seat.
2005's 'Saw II' grossed more than $87 million domestically, yet each sequel that's followed has seen a subsequent decline in ticket sales. It seems like the series, while having a better run than similar-minded series, has officially run its course.
We all remember "diminishing returns" from economics class, right? But does the addition of 3-D revive the series or scream "sad gimmick"? We're going with the latter, but have a say in the Comments section.
