Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is considering not one -- but two -- comic book franchise roles."I would love to, of course," Johnson told Moviefone at Saturday's 'Planet 51' premiere in Westwood, Calif., when asked if he will take on roles in DC Comics' 'Shazam!,' following the adventures of Captain Marvel, and 'The First Avenger: Captain America.'
"Especially 'Shazam,' Black Adam -- we have talked about that for such a long time," Johnson said. "I am not quite too sure what is happening with that right now. I am still always excited about that. As far as for 'Captain America,' sure, absolutely. If it's entertaining for the audiences, yeah."
Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada caused a stir in the blogosphere recently when he said at Big Apple Comic-Con, "I've seen a couple of outlines and an initial screenplay, and it's going to rock everyone's socks off. It's very unexpected, the kind of movie it is."
The "rock" part of Quesada's quote gained traction because some perceived it was a hint Johnson would be taking the role.
Meanwhile, 'Shazam' writer Bill Burch hinted in a recent interview with CineFools that 'Shazam's' director Peter Segal, who directed Johnson in last year's 'Get Smart,' could find a match in Johnson for Black Adam, who is Captain Marvel's black-suited anti-hero, or Capt. Marvel himself.
"My rule of thumb is that no actor is committed to do a movie until the first day of shooting is over with," Birch said. "I know that Pete Segal and Dwayne have a relationship that was solidified when Pete directed 'Get Smart.' As far as him being committed? I'm sure it'll all depend on the script."
Johnson said Saturday, "I was never big into comic books when I was a kid, but I do like comic book movies. I like the way they have gone. The adaptations are generally pretty cool."
Meantime, Johnson is back in the holiday kids' animated movie, 'Planet 51,' in which he plays Capt. Charles T. Baker, out Nov. 20. It is the first animated movie role for the famously physical actor and former pro wrestler.
"That was an interesting process that I quickly learned within the first 10 minutes, which is how important energy is," Johnson, who stars next in January's 'Tooth Fairy,' said at Saturday's 'Planet 51' premiere. "How important it is that your voice lends life to the character, of finding different tones, intonations, volumes, and singing in different keys. I learned [that] pretty quickly, which is cool."
