It looks as though Disney's big-budget epic 'Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' has been scuttled before it even set sail. Variety has confirmed that Disney has placed the film on hold indefinitely. The February production date had been fast tracked by then-Disney studio chief Dick Cook back in January. New Disney chief Rich Ross, however, is in the process of restructuring the movie studio. Instead, the the fourth installment of Disney's tried-and-true hit 'Pirates of the Carribbean' will be the studio's "next big water-based shoot."
Director McG, who had been attached to the remake, is no longer on board. According to Variety, the 'Terminator Salvation' director was to be paid $8 million against 7% of the gross. Though no leads had been set for the film, McG told Latino Review at the 'Terminator Salvation' roadshow presentation in January that he had been trying to get Will Smith to play the role of the mysterious Captain Nemo.
The classic Jules Verne science fiction novel has a history with the Mouse House. In 1954, the original '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' was Walt Disney's first live-action film.
McG is presently working on the Stephen Gaghan-penned 'Dead Spy Running,' and is still attached to direct the fifth installment of the Terminator franchise -- should that ever happen.
