Rachel McAdams Shoots Down 'Spider-Man 4' Casting Rumors

Did we mew too soon? After reports last week that Rachel McAdams could be cast as the scorchingly sexy Black Cat in 'Spider-Man 4,' the actress says she was never within a whisker of signing a deal.

Entertainment Weekly quotes the actress as saying that she only learned about her casting when blogs and tabloids ran the story. "That's a total rumor, I have to say," she told EW. "I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, 'I just heard you're doing 'Spider-Man 4.' And I said, 'Really? No one told me!' It's not true." A Sony Pictures rep even corroborated McAdams' claim.

All right then, let's just scratch the idea.

But wait a minute. Originally, Mania.com asserted that McAdams had met with the producers of the sequel, not that a deal was signed. And director Sam Raimi neither confirmed nor denied that McAdams was under consideration. Could there be some gamesmanship here?

Someone in the business -- maybe trotting out McAdams' name as a trial balloon; maybe to pressure some other as-yet-unknown actress into inking a deal -- put the rumor out there. So maybe there was a kernel of truth here to begin with. This is Hollywood, after all, where truth comes in three flavors: half-truth, some truth, and "I'll tell you later over a cosmo."

And anyway, aside from McAdams stating she'd never do a big-budget action flick, why shouldn't she play the Black Cat? She is beautiful, a fine actress, and the camera adores her. Given the not-exactly-unanimous critical opinion of 'Spider-Man 3,' should Raimi want an insurance policy for the next installment in the franchise? Even if there never were talks between the parties, someone should pick up the phone. This could be easier to lap up than a bowl of fresh cream.
