GQ Nails It With Their Men of the Year: Chris Pine, Clint Eastwood and 'The Hangover' Guys

While we certainly can't argue with the hot factor of the beefcake chosen for PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive issue, we can't say we're particularly wowed by the picks, which consisted of previous winners (Johnny Depp), stars who've been on our radar forever (Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr.), notorious hotties (David Beckham, John Legend), the random oddball/"his publicist muscled us into it" choice (Nick Cannon? Really?) and a few new faces who could hardly be overlooked (the "Glee" guys, Robert Pattison, Adam Lambert, the smoking hot Gilles Marini). All perfectly legitimate picks. And alas, mostly predictable.

So we were pretty thrilled to get a gander at GQ's Men of the Year listing. Granted, the men's fashion magazine has a very different set of criteria than People (men who made a splash this year vs. men we'd like to cover in cocoa butter and drag into a private cabana), but the list also has a much tighter grip on what's happening today.

'Star Trek' star Chris Pine, who's next up to take on the Jake Ryan franchise, may not have Johnny Depp's smoldering sensuality, but he makes perfect sense as GQ's Breakout of the Year. No one wants to see 79-year-old Clint Eastwood doing a shirtless pictorial these days, but with a Dave Brubek biopic in the works, the Nelson Mandela story 'Invictus' out next month and the thriller 'Hereafter' filming, the hardest working senior citizen in the world is definitely deserving of GQ's Badass of the Year status.

We're also betting PEOPLE just isn't cool enough to give props to 'The Hangover' guys (Funnymen of the Year); Twitter's Biz Stone and Evan Williams (Nerds of the Year); Wale, Drake and Kid Cudi (Gangsta Killers of the Year); Phoenix (Band on the Run); or 'Inglourious Basterds' baddie Christoph Waltz as Villain of the Year.

Nothng against PEOPLE -- and we do love us the Johnny Depp -- but they really couldn't bring themselves to slap new blood like Robert Pattison on the cover? Even if you're not a Twihard, at least he hasn't already been the Sexiest Man Alive.

Not that GQ's list is perfect, mind you. While we're definitely not sold on GQ's sexist Obsession of the Year category (that slightly creepy nod went to Leighton Meester), we can only be so put off -- after all, PEOPLE devotes an entire issue to beefcake, so we'll call it even. This time.

Here's a complete list of GQ's Men of the Year:
