Anne Hathaway Joins 'Spider-Man 4' Rumor Mill

The floodgates are opening! Nikke Finke's Deadline Hollywood is now reporting that Anne Hathaway's name has been tossed in the ring for a possible starring role in 'Spider-Man 4.' Gee, what role could that be for?

Suffice it to say, with Rachel McAdams' name first being floated -- then passionately disavowed -- for the role of the Black Cat, followed by yesterday's news that Julia Stiles reportedly took a meeting about the same role, Hathaway's name is just the latest on a growing list of Tinseltown tantalizers under consideration for the sexy super-feline in the upcoming Sam Raimi-directed picture.

Is Hathaway right for the role? Well, there's debate to be had about that. She is obviously a superior beauty, of course. But the Black Cat requires an brisk undertone of menace, a hint of anger and danger, a smidgen of out-on-a-limb sexuality that isn't exactly Hathaway's hallmark. We're all for stretching one's talent, but any actress' public image can only be altered so far so fast, and the Black Cat could well be received by audiences as more of a bizarre choice than a brilliant one.

So, let us repeat yesterday's question: Why must a white woman play the Black Cat? We already trial-ballooned two purr-fectly gorgeous ideas: Paula Patton and Zoe Saldana. Below are more for you to choose from -- or leave some comments and suggest your own. It's not as if the producers have their act together on this one, so maybe Julie Newmar, the original Catwoman on TV's 'Batman'? Or Karen Black? Shirley Temple Black? Nah, we're just foolin'.

Who should play the Black Cat in 'Spider-Man 4'?
