Following the lead of 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' and 'Precious,' Hollywood has pulled another best-seller off the shelf for a feature film adaptation with the 'The Blind Side,' opening November 20. Written and directed by John Lee Hancock and based on Michael Lewis' 2006 best-selling sports drama 'The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game,' the film comes to life with Sandra Bullock running the show as Leigh Anne Tuohy, an affluent socialite do-gooder whose family adopts an illiterate and neglected teenage schoolmate of her young son. Motivated by his supportive new family and a host of enviable opportunities, the teen becomes a sought-after college football prospect and eventually a first-round 2009 NFL draft pick for the Baltimore Ravens. 'The Blind Side' sticks to Hollywood's feel-good formula of inspiring audiences with the incredible tale of an unstoppable underdog, an old standby that made classics out of similar sports dramas like 'Rocky' and 'Rudy.' The fact that Hancock's picture is based on a true story gives the feature some added weight, as do solid performances from Bullock and newcomer Quinton Aaron, who Variety says "more than holds his own opposite Bullock" as real-life gridiron hero Michael Oher. Country star Tim McGraw, who scored plenty of cred for his role in the 2004 book-to-flick football drama 'Friday Night Lights,' co-stars as Bullock's husband, and although he looks almost unrecognizable, his acting talents haven't gone unnoticed. Judging from early reviews, despite the film's cookie-cutter storyline, 'The Blind Side' has most critics cheering.
Variety: "Even though Hancock applies more than a smidge of sugar-coating to his dramatization, 'The Blind Side' remains involving, affecting and, for the most part, emotionally honest. Better still, the pic has an insightful and evenhanded view of racial and political realities in the contemporary South."
The Los Angeles Times: "This is the kind of inspiring and solid upbeat studio release that could, and should, put Bullock firmly in the race for best actress. This could be her 'Erin Brockovich.'...'The Blind Side,' together with her romantic comedy box-office smash 'The Proposal,' should make 2009 this star's most memorable year ever."
The Hollywood Reporter: "Sticking safely to proven inspirational sports-movie/fish-out-of-water formulas while holding the inherent sociological issues to the sidelines, the dramedy doesn't skimp on the crowd-pleasing stuff, but given the setup, there also was room for more thought-provoking substance."

Entertainment Weekly: "'The Blind Side' is a feel-good movie that never stops feeling good. The film is based on a true story...but you never feel that Hancock has honestly captured what's true about it. He's so devoted to showing us what upbeat, selfless folks Leigh Anne and her family are that the movie never quite gets around to discovering what any of those far superior saintly-family TV shows [like '7th Heaven'] surely would have: a dramatic conflict."
San Francisco Chronicle: "Writer-director John Lee Hancock wisely lets the true story of Michael Oher speak for itself. That direct focus delivers a feel-good crowd-pleaser, but it also drains the film of the kind of subtle nuances that might have separated it from other Hollywood Hallmark-like efforts, including Hancock's own 'The Rookie.'"
US Weekly: "While the drama's script is a little formulaic (yes, Oher helps his team win the big game and, yes, joining the Tuohy family helps him get his life together), its message still inspires."
The Huffington Post: "There are few big melodramatic scenes -- a key football game, an encounter with his old neighborhood crew -- but plenty of small and affecting dramatic ones. This moving film is about the little moments of emotional discovery -- for both Leigh Anne and Michael."
Chicago Tribune: "'The Blind Side' should be on the Lifetime network starring Tori Spelling, not contending for an Oscar. Yet, writer/director John Lee Hancock brings out an intangible charm to 'The Blind Side' that makes it fun, touching and entertaining."
NPR: "John Lee Hancock's julep-sweet screenplay pretty much turns the book's measured account of Oher's story into a feel-good fantasy for white liberals...[He]'s only aiming for a crowd pleaser, and by not challenging the established playbook for inspirational sports dramas, he's no doubt got one."

Sandra Bullock was commanding, witty, and beautiful! Tim McGraw did an excellent job in his role. This is the best movie I have ever seen. It really makes you appreciate what you have. After seeing this movie I cant help but feel pain for people like Michael Oher. Those out there as we speak going through the same pains he did. This movie has changed me and I hope there are a lot more families out there like the Tuohy's. God Bless Michael and the Touhy family.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but plan too very soon. Thank you Hollywood for making movies such as these to remind us that there is good in the world.
May God continue to bless the Touhy family for their unselfish acts.

This is the best movie I have seen in a very long time, and it was more then I thought it would be. I wanted to see it without a doubt, but it really did suprise me, and I loved the Credits (Stay For them). I am now going back to see it again today with my kids. Well worth the money. Finally something that is uplifting that isn't aimed at children, seems like all adults get to watch are doom and gloom, or just plain slap stick, all of which are ok, but finally nice to see something with substance that motivates as well.

I saw The Blind Side on Thursday and absolutely LOVED it. It is funny, touching, and bold for a major movie release. The writing is excellent and flows effortlessly throughout the entire movie. It is not one of those politically correct sanitized movies that stays away from the role of religion or politics. This movie embraces it in a believable way. The family is Christian. They are conservative. And the movie shows them applying their faith and finances to back what they believe in. No, it does not go deep into what I'm sure were many of the dramatic issues involved in what they did. The movie only lightly touches those issues. As a result, the movie is charming, funny, and will be something you will think about for a long time to come. Treat yourself to something special. Go see it.

The film is a good character drama, and a good vehicle for Bullock to try to bridge out of the whole Rom/Com genre for which she is best known. To read my full review go to www.examiner.com and look for the San Fernando Valley Movie Critic (that's ME)!

This is one of the best, inspirational movies I have ever watched. I loved it!!! Every age can watch this & have a happy feeling instead of watching such violence! I can't wait to go see it again!

I haven't seen the movie and I won't. But from the trailer, I can see that this is one of those BS movies that makes whites feel superior. A white woman telling a black kid not to bother her "black son" What a joke! Cut it out already.

you are commenting on something that you have not seen, which is not wise. also you are commenting on a true life experience, not fiction. you need to think before you speak.

too bad Ki decided to judge this film on some silly remark he saw in the trailer.....he has missed one on the best movies thats come out in a long time...oh well, his loss!

Absolutely one of the best movies I've seen to date. Took my kids (8, 13, 16) and my 97 year old grandmother on a different date. All...were fully engaged the whole time. Sandra Bullock gives a commanding performance, and though I admit I was surprized, Tim McGraw delivers as well.
I have recomended the movie to everyone that I know. I sure do hope Bullock walks away with an Oscar for this one!

Blind Side is one of Sandra Bullock's best. She gave a strong and believable performance as Leigh Ann Tuohy. The movie itself was family friendly and uplifting, something that is hard to find, nowadays. I hate to pay money for a movie ticket and leave the theater feeling depressed. Blind Side was funny, light-hearted, and inspiring. It also gives the viewer plenty to think about by dealing with some harsh realities of life. The movie maintained a positive focus by successfully working through life's difficulties.I laughed, I cried, and I cheered for the hero to succeed. One important point emphasized in the movie was that positive change is possible if someone believes in himself and works hard to succeed. This movie also shows America's youth that a good education can be instrumental in achieving one's quest for success. Blind Side is great movie to enjoy with a family that has older children who can understand the concepts being presented.

This movie was awesome.. we are avid movie goers, and this is one of the best movies in a long time.. Precious is also a must see...Do not see Men that stare at goats....Put the money out and take your kids to see this one.. as for the other gent, saying we should keep it real, hey buddy, this was real, it was a true story. What difference does it make what color the boy or the woman was, people are people, and it is nice to be reminded that compassion still exists in some.. I loved it, and so did my husband...
Deb at 12:38AM on Dec 8th 2009
The best story, especially because it's true!!! For the person named Ki who rated this movie without seeing it, maybe you shouldn't. Also you are rating a true life story, this is not fiction made by white people. Some people prefer to not notice the color as much as the heart. That's what this movie is about...the heart.

By way of background Bullock comes from the South. She turned down the role 3 times because she has been disappointed by phoney 'Christians' (she might be agnostic) and couldn't play a phoney one. The director asked her to actually visit the Christian School and meet the Touhy family who are the "real deal". The rest is history. The guy waiting in the dmv line is Patrick G. Keenan an actor and teacher I have met at John Casablancas Charlotte. Very Cool Stuff.
