Mia Wasikowska in Talks for 'Jane Eyre'

From a trip down the rabbit hole to the wilds of the English countryside, Mia Wasikowska is enjoying quite the Hollywood journey. According to Variety, Wasikowska is currently in negotiations to take the titular role in a new adaptation of 'Jane Eyre' to be directed by 'Sin Nombre' helmer Cary Fukunaga.

Wasikowska is no stranger to playing outspoken heroines since Tim Burton hand-picked the 20-year-old Australian to portray the eponymous Alice in his long-awaited reimagining of 'Alice in Wonderland,' a film that will doubtless catapult Wasikowska to the forefront of Hollywood's hot list. In addition to Disney's 'Alice,' Wasikowska has scored a role in Gus Van Sant's as-yet untitled project to be produced by Bryce Dallas Howard and her father Ron Howard, tentatively scheduled for release in 2011. She has previously appeared in 'Defiance' with Daniel Craig and the recent, lackluster 'Amelia' biopic.

If English literature hits your snooze button, the premise of 'Jane Eyre' (a novel written by Charlotte Brontë in 1847) follows Jane, a demure governess who falls for her brooding employer, Rochester, before discovering that he harbors a sinister secret. 'Inglourious Basterds' star Michael Fassbender is in talks to play Rochester, with Fukunaga promising to play up the Gothic, suspenseful elements of the classic period piece.

Of course, Wasikowska's star potential remains to be seen until the release of 'Alice' next March, but with Hollywood heavy-hitters like Burton and Van Sant investing in her career, and co-stars like Johnny Depp and Fassbender to play against, you'd have to be mad as a hatter to ignore this leading lady's charms.
