Looks like someone's gunning to be the next big sci-fi/fantasy icon, judging from a recent report by Mania. After having blasted his way through last summer's 'Terminator: Salvation' and James Cameron's upcoming 'Avatar,' not to mention slicing off heads in next year's 'Clash Of The Titans' remake, 33-year-old Aussie actor Sam Worthington has signed on to co-star in the movie version of Rick Remender's upcoming three-part Radical Comics miniseries 'The Last Days of American Crime,' according to a report in Variety.Written by Remender and illustrated by Greg Tocchini, 'American Crime' is a sci-fi heist thriller that takes place in the near-future. The media has leaked news of governmental plans to secretly broadcast a signal that will neuter the conscious criminal impulses in all U.S. citizens. Naturally, this revelation leads to disorder, and life-long criminal Graham Brick's plans of an amazing heist are accelerated as he works with an untested new team to beat the clock and get rich quick. Worthington will play Kevin Cash, a safe-cracker enlisted for the gig.
'Crime' creator Remender, who has been writing the screenplay as he has penned the comics, will either co-produce or executive produce, with Radical chief Barry Levine producing along with Michael Schwarz. They promise that other A-listers will be brought on board.
In just three short years in Hollywood, Worthington has made an impressive jump from being an Aussie TV actor and B-movie lead -- err, 'Rogue' anyone? -- to landing starring roles in no less than three big budget Hollywood films. Nice. (Thanks, James Cameron.) Luckily he's got an upcoming romantic drama with Keira Knightley ('Last Night') to keep him from being typecast as a sci-fi star who prefers not to live in the present. At least not too much.
