The writers of the upcoming 'Conan' reboot are about to take the video game smash 'Drake's Fortune' into truly uncharted territory: the cineplex. Latino Review is reporting that Sony, the company behind the mega-hit PlayStation game 'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune' and it's even bigger sequel 'Uncharted 2: Among Thieves,' is close to terms with Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to write the film adaptation. This marks a shift for the potential franchise, which previously had announced that scribe Kyle Ward would be penning the screenplay.
That deal, however, apparently fell through due to Ward's other commitments, including fellow video game flick 'Hitman 2,' opening the door for Donnelly and Oppenheimer. The duo, who previously collaborated on 'Sahara,' currently have a number of scripts in production, including the eagerly anticipated 'Conan' relaunch.
The pair's action background should make them a good fit for 'Drake's Fortune,',which chronicles the adventures of Nathan Drake, an Indiana Jones-style treasure hunter who gets in over his head when he discovers the location of the fabled golden city of El Dorado.
While most video game adaptations have fallen flat, the 'Uncharted' franchise would seem to be perfectly suited for the big screen, as it boasts a number of highly cinematic sequences and film-ready storylines that follow the tradition of previous hit movies like 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and 'National Treasure' (you can see for yourself on YouTube with this trailer for 'Uncharted 2').
Of course, the same was said of 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,' but while that movie did well enough to spawn a sequel, thanks in part to the presence of Angelina Jolie, it didn't become the mainstream hit that many industry experts expected.
It's still too early to tell, then, whether this time 'Uncharted' will prove to be the real thing or, like its predecessors, just another chunk of fool's gold.
