That significant '80s cultural artifact 'The Howling' is coming back just in time for Halloween 2010.According to Variety, Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh of Moonstone Entertainment are prepping a reboot of the popular franchise aptly titled 'The Howling: Reborn.' Joe Nimziki, who penned the script, will make his directorial debut on the werewolf-themed relaunch. The first iteration of 'The Howling' was a gritty and somewhat tongue-in-cheek 1981 horror film directed by Joe Dante from a script by John Sayles. The franchise ultimately produced six sequels before sputtering out with the regrettable 'Howling VI: The Freaks' in 1991. The plot of 'The Howling: Reborn' is under wraps.
With a spate of werewolf-laden flicks currently in the pipeline, we have to wonder: Are werewolves the new vampires? Vampires have made a pop-culture resurgence of late, thanks in no small part to 'Twilight,' and now it seems werewolves are the next beasts to get their big-screen due.
Variety reported in June that Dimension Films is developing a remake of the John Landis film 'An American Werewolf in London.' And, more significantly, 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon.' which features the werewolf-like Wolf Pack, made a monstrous impression on the box office this weekend, capturing the third biggest weekend tally of all-time. Meanwhile, Universal's 'The Wolf Man,' scheduled to premiere in February 2010, recently launched their international trailer to significant online buzz. So it seems that werewolves, arguably the buffest monsters in our pop culture bestiary, are now having their moment in the sun. No pun intended.
