Natalie Portman: Kat Dennings Is a 'Thor' Cast Member

Are you ready to Ragna-ROCK? Is it time for a spin through Thor & Norah's Infinite Playlist?

'Thor'
co-star Natalie Portman broke the news to MTV News yesterday that Kat Dennings (pictured, right) is joining the cast of the Marvel superhero epic. Marvel confirmed the news in a press release today. No word yet on what role she'll be playing, though fanboy speculation is already rampant.

There aren't a whole lot of women in the thunder god's life. One, according to Marvel mythology, is Jane Hudson, a mortal nurse, to be played by Portman. Another is Amora, known as the Enchantress (pictured, below left), a manipulative sorceress and an immortal from Asgard, like Thor, with whom she's had a long off-and-on romance. The Enchantress is the best guess among comics aficionados for Dennings' role.

Dennings, best known for starring alongside Michael Cera in last year's 'Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist,' is also a friend of Portman's. "Well, I'm really excited," Portman told MTV News. "Kat Dennings is going to be in it with me and she's a good friend and an amazing actress, so I'm looking forward to that."

Portman's casting was announced in July. As she told MTV News yesterday, "Well, I was really excited when they told me Kenneth Branagh is directing it because it seemed like such a smart choice but such an unexpected choice, that it was like 'This is really weird. I have to try this.'"

The news of Dennings' casting follows the recent announcements that Idris Elba will play Asgard gatekeeper Heimdall and that Anthony Hopkins will play Odin, patriarch of the Norse gods. Chris Hemsworth has the title role of Thor, and Tom Hiddleston is playing the villainous trickster god Loki. Paramount and Marvel Studios have locked in a release date for 'Thor' of May 20. 2011.

UPDATE: Sorry, Enchantress fans. Variety reports that Dennings will play Darcy, a co-worker of Portman's Jane. Then again, the Enchantress is a tricky gal who's used a lot of aliases...
