The Hollywood Reporter Ranks the Top 10 Movie Flops of the Decade

Two things are made abundantly clear by the Hollywood Reporter's just-released list of the top 10 movie flops of the decade, which we should henceforth call the "naughty aughties." One is that sheer cinematic awfulness isn't something measurable by numbers alone. No, cautions THR, "judgments of flopitude are necessarily subjective," but rather must factor in "expectations dashed and high profiles brought low" in order to truly assess a film's failure.

THR's list -- ranked from least-worst to worst-worst -- includes 2008's 'The Spirit,' 2007's 'Grindhouse,' 2002's 'Rollerball,' 2007's 'The Invasion,' 2004's 'Catwoman,' 2001's 'Town & Country,' 2003's 'Gigli,' 2009's 'Land of the Lost,' 2000's 'Battlefield Earth' and 2002's 'The Adventures of Pluto Nash.'

So what's the second thing that THR's list makes clear? Astoundingly, the fact that five of the 10 films they cite were already bestowed places of very low esteem on Moviefone's list of the Biggest Box-Office Turkeys of All Time, which we published back in November 2007. Are we that good that we already knew what the worst of the decade's worst would be? Well, let's just be honest: It doesn't get much more pitiful than Eddie Murphy in a gargantuan-budgeted, financially (and artistically) disastrous sci-fi comedy.

The five films on THR's list that had already dishonored on Moviefone's are 'Catwoman' (11th place), 'Battlefield Earth' (10th place), 'Gigli' (9th place) and two films with the lowest honors of all: 'The Adventures of Pluto Nash' (2nd place) and 'Town & Country' (1st place). Congratulations, guys!
