You can practically hear the narrative of the trailer: "... a place where nothing ... not even light ... not even energy ... not even time ... can escape." We're talking about a black hole -- specifically, a remake of the 1979 cult-classic sci-fi film 'The Black Hole,' which established Disney as a major player in special effects.According to the Hollywood Reporter, the duo behind Disney's upcoming 'Tron: Legacy' -- director Joseph Kosinski (who is also behind 2010's 'Logan's Run' remake) and producer Sean Bailey -- have been tapped alongside screenwriter Travis Beachem to breathe new life into 'The Black Hole,' presumably for a 2011 or 2012 release.
In 1979, the whole notion of black holes lurking deep in outer space was more a matter of received wisdom from astronomers and physicists than the scientific, nearly observable certainty with which they are regarded today. All the advances made in black hole science over the last 30 years may, in fact, furnish Kosinski, Bailey, Beachem, et. al., with fodder for the remake's storyline, which remains under wraps for now. THR does suggest, however, that the remake will lean heavily on what has been scientifically verified about black holes as we understand them today.
Loosely derived from Jules Verne's fantasy novel (and subsequent film) '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,' the original 'Black Hole' starred Maximilian Schell, Yvette Mimieux, Anthony Perkins and Ernest Borgnine. The plot tracked an intrepid group of space probers who happen upon a vanished ship idling just outside the parameters of the titular object. There is but one scientist aboard, yet he oversees what seems like multiple brigades of obsequious robots. Veteran actor Roddy McDowall memorably voiced many of the obedient automatons.
