DGA Honors Norman Jewison With Lifetime Achievement Award

The Directors Guild of America will be giving its Lifetime Achievement Award to filmmaker Norman Jewison early next year, Variety reports.

Jewison will be the 33rd artist to receive the award and will be joining a prestigious lineup of past recipients, including Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood.

Jewison has had quite the exciting and unpredictable career, refusing to be pigeonholed into just one genre, switching with grace and ease from crime drama to musical to romantic comedy and back again. He helmed one of the best action films of the 1960s, 'In the Heat of the Night,' then went on to big-screen adaptations of 'Fiddler on the Roof' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar.' He then directed one of the best action films of the 1970s, 'Rollerball,' and continued to keep audiences on their toes with powerful dramas such as 'And Justice For All,' 'A Soldier's Story' and 'Agnes of God.'

Jewison also directed the wonderful 'Moonstruck,' the romantic comedy starring Cher and Nicolas Cage, and the underrated Vietnam drama, 'In Country,' starring Bruce Willis and Emily Lloyd. Jewison later directed 'The Hurricane,' starring Denzel Washington, and 'The Statement,' a thriller starring Michael Caine and Tilda Swinton.

Norman Jewison will receive the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award at the 62nd Annual DGA Awards on January 30, 2010, at the Century Plaza. Way to go, Norm!
