The Time Traveller's Wife (12)What's it about: Clare (Rachel McAdams) and Henry (Eric Bana) are in love, unfortunately Henry's tendency for uncontrollable time travelling threatens to ruin everything...
What we say: Based on a successful book and starring pretty young things Bana and McAdams, The Time Traveller's Wife completes it brief successfully (ie hitting the right notes and just about coping with the confusing time travelling plot). It won't be bothering any awards ceremonies but for fans of romantic dramas it's as good an excuse as any to cry into a box of popcorn.
In a nutshell: This is lightweight, throwaway airport novel movie-making. It's watchable, but eminently forgettable.
Score: 6/10
Couples Retreat (15)What's it about: Bickering married couple Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kristen Bell) trick their friends into accompanying them to a retreat for troubled marriages. When they arrive their friends realise, to much dismay, that they must all join in with the counselling.
What we say: You'll notice we didn't add 'and hilarity ensues' to the end of the previous sentence. Which is a real shame too because with this many talented comic actors in one place you'd think they would have come up with a funny film at least by accident. However, the script by Vaughn and Favreau reads as an excuse for a bunch of highly paid actors to have a jolly in the Caribbean. They must have had fun, something the audience of this film aren't likely to experience.
In a nutshell: A waste of a great opportunity, it made a tonne of money so hopefully the inevitable sequel will improve on this lacklustre effort.
Score: 4/10
Also out this week:
The Ugly Truth (15) - Gerard Butler needs to stop doing rom-coms and Katherine Heigl needs to watch Knocked Up again. A horrifically unfunny film.
In The Electric Mist (15) - Tommy Lee Jones comes up against John Goodman in this Cajun flavour crime thriller.
