The big-budget animated version of 'A Christmas Carol' made the most money at the box office this weekend, but the low-budget 'Precious' made the biggest statement.

Playing in only 18 theaters in four American cities (New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago), the grim tale about a sexually abused Harlem teenager grossed $1.8 million, for an astonishing per-theater average of about $100,000. It is fair to say that in one weekend, 'Precious' was transformed from a critics' and film festival favorite to an odds-on Best Picture Oscar contender.

We've not heard much from the Sherlock Holmes camp over the past few months, have we? Well, let's put an end to that right now. The brand-new two-and-a-half minute trailer has just gone live and we have to say it's looking pretty fantastic.

'A Christmas Carol' is so well-known and oft-told a tale (we found nearly 70 versions listed!) that the TV spots for the new film with Jim Carrey need only hit the highlights: Marley's ghost! There's an ongoing unsolved mystery in Alaska, where one town has seen an extraordinary number of unexplained disappearances over the last 40 years. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered. Loosely based on actual events, 'The Fourth Kind' follows the story of these so-called alien possessions.

Psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) begins videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovers some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. 'The Fourth Kind' exposes the terrifying revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.

Having spent much of 2009 turning its searchlight toward the ocean of filmdom and seeing little more than inky blackness, Fox Searchlight is suddenly going all in, advancing 'Crazy Heart' to a limited December release -- just in the nick of time for serious consideration by Uncle Oscar.
