Top 10 Performances By Animals in 2009

Let's face it, Hollywood actors are a bunch of animals.

Luckily, sometimes they turn out to be the cute and furry sort, which is really better for all involved. The good news is that, thanks to the magic CGI and other special effects, the cuddly sort were all over the cineplex this year, making even the most notoriously difficult critters a director's dream and allowing animals some of the meatiest roles of the year.

Here are our picks for the cream of the crop (or herd, or flock, or colony... well, you get the idea).

'Blind Side' Leads Soft Post-Thanksgiving Box Office: Dec.4-6 Wrapup

The week after Thanksgiving is always slow at the multiplex, but what's happening this weekend is ridiculous. If Sunday estimates hold, the combined gross of the top 10 movies on the box office chart will be less than $77 million.

The three-day total for last weekend's top 10 was $171 million. The difference represents a drop of about 55 percent. True, there were no audience sparklers among the three new wide releases. As I suggested in my Friday forecast, movies about bad times run the risk of being ignored during bad times, especially in the midst of the holiday season. And that's what happened to 'Brothers,' which is set to finish third with an estimated $9.7 million, sixth-place 'Armored' ($6.6 million) and tenth-place 'Everybody's Fine' ($4 million).

See Images from Kristen Stewart's New Stripper Movie

Kristen StewartThere were only two possible directions for Bella Kristen Stewart to take in order for her to avoid being pigeon-holed for ever as that girl from the Twilight movies. One route was to star as a stripper in her next movie, the other would have been to marry Tom Cruise. And seeing as that last opportunity has passed, Ms Stewart has wisely gone for option one.

Free Movie of the Day: 'Big Nothing'

Do the holidays have you in the mood for a palette-cleansing dark comedy? 'Big Nothing' might be just what you're looking for.

Directed by Cannes-native Jean-Baptiste Andrea, this 2006 British film inexplicably went straight to video in the U.S., and so it stayed largely off the mainstream radar, which is surprising considering it stars David Schwimmer and Simon Pegg, two gifted comic actors with great chemistry between them. (It's no wonder that a year later Schwimmer went on to direct Pegg in Run, Fatboy, Run).

    Film Fixation Podcast: Episode 23

Everybody's fine as Moviefone editors Kevin Polowy, Angie Argabrite and Tommy DiChiara discuss the latest film releases, including the heavyweight Oscar contender 'Up int he Air,' the Matt Dillon heist flick 'Armored' and the Robert De Niro family comedy drama 'Everybody's Fine.'

    Top 10 Comedies of 2009

The comedy tide turned a bit in 2009. Titans dropped (Will Ferrell in 'Land of the Lost') while underdogs soared (Zach Galifianakis in 'The Hangover'). Alpha males were KO'd (Vince Vaughn in 'Couples Retreat') while beta males were throw punishing right hooks (Paul Rudd in 'I Love You, Man') -- in quality, at least; box office is another story.

Check out our list of top 10 laughers of the year -- which, we should mention, doesn't include the divisive 'Invention of Lying,' 'Bruno,' and 'Observe & Report.' While many people laughed, too many yawned (or walked out; cue the 'Bruno' hate in the comments section). Then there's Pixar's 'Up,' which is hilarious, but the trail of tears a viewer walks to get there keeps it off the comedy table. We're still crying.

Oscars 2010: The Race So Far - Best Supporting Actress

If you want to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress this year, it helps to be in one of three movies: 'Precious,' 'Up in the Air' and 'Nine.' This is one of 2009's most competitive races, and multiple actresses from each of these movies will be fighting their costars as well as actresses from other films to win one of the five coveted slots at the Golden Globes or the Oscars.

The Lock: Mo'Nique (pictured, above right) is the one sure thing in this category; the comedian's surprisingly powerful and terrifying performance as an abusive mom in 'Precious' has had a nomination sewn up since the movie premiered at Sundance last winter ...
